Job Description

Griffith Business School strives to prepare graduates for an ever-changing world where responsible leadership and sustainable business practices are critical. Our strong industry connections and partnerships with many high-profile organisations across the country and throughout the Asia–Pacific region ensure our graduates are equipped to meet the demands of employers today and in the future.

The Department of Accounting, Finance and Economics offers industry-recognised undergraduate and postgraduate programs in accounting, banking, business statistics, economics, finance, financial planning, taxation and financial crime. We have a strong and active research focus, with several staff holding external research grants and a history of successful PhD student completions with attractive employment outcomes.

Griffith University’s Centre for Applied Energy Economics and Policy Research (CAEEPR) is an academic centre that aims to maximise the energy sector’s potential to achieve emission reductions and contribute to inclusive, sustainable and prosperous businesses and communities while building capacity in electricity economics. The Centre uses a national electricity market model to develop and analyse different scenarios to assess different policy positions for generator dispatch and transmission efficiency. CAEEPR has recently expanded its modelling work to closely related fields, such as electricity wholesale prices, storage charging/dispatch decisions, and optimal consumer decisions in response to increased renewables.

The Opportunity
The Department of Accounting, Finance and Economics is looking for a Senior Lecturer in Energy Economics to work within the Centre for Applied Energy Economics and Policy Research. This role will focus on applied/quantitative modelling of the Queensland and Australian energy sectors.

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Teaching quantitative courses, including modelling and forecasting uncertainty, developing hedging strategies and designing financial instruments.
  • Research in the field of energy economics, including publications in highly ranked journals, contributing to working papers for industry partners and developing grant applications.
  • Interaction with CAEEPR members and other energy stakeholders in Queensland and elsewhere.
  • Supervision of higher degree research students.
  • Contributing to CAEEPR seminars, workshops and events.

About you
To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • A PhD in Economics/Finance or a related field.
  • Research in the field of energy economics, with a strong track record of publications in economics or energy journals and evidence of teaching excellence with undergraduate and higher degree research students.
  • A strong record of securing funding and collaboration with industry partners, including evidence of participation in external grant applications as part of a multidisciplinary research team.
  • Experience/knowledge of modelling of wholesale energy markets (including the National Energy Market (NED)), analysis of the economics of renewables, and economic policy related to climate change.
  • Strong skills in quantitative models. For example, time-series econometrics, panel data econometrics, statistical inference, game theory, dynamic optimisation and models used in finance/financial economics.
  • An understanding of both academic and practice-based considerations within the energy economics field.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with government and industry stakeholders.
  • Knowledge, skills and leadership in teaching and curriculum/program development at the tertiary education level, and a proven ability in the administration of university courses and programs.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach across a breadth of courses within the Department. In addition to fulfilling teaching requirements, the candidate must demonstrate success in attracting significant external research funding, evidence of a competitive research track record and national recognition consistent with discipline benchmarks, and proven experience in developing partnerships and collaborations with leading institutions and research end-users in their field.
