Job Description

In concert with each summer MTX, the MCMWTC Formal Schools teaches the Animal Packing and SOF Horsemanship Courses. The Animal Packing Course is designed to teach alternative methods for transporting crew-served weapons, ammunition, supplies, and wounded personnel to and from areas inaccessible to mechanized and air mobile transportation. The course subjects include:

  • Introduction to animal packing
  • Anatomy of pack animals
  • Animal packing techniques
  • Casualty evacuation techniques
  • Animal first aid
  • Bivouac considerations

The pack animals may then be employed by the USMC Infantry Battalion, Special Operations Forces (SOF) or the OPFOR conducting that MTX in any or all of the above mission profiles.

The SOF Horsemanship Course is designed to teach Special Operations personnel alternative methods for transporting personnel, crew-served weapons, ammunition, supplies, and wounded personnel to and from areas inaccessible to mechanized and air mobile transportation. It also teaches the students how to utilize the animals as an infiltration platform. Course subjects include an introduction to animal packing, the anatomy of pack animals, animal packing techniques, acquisition of pack animals, casualty evacuation techniques, riding horses, animal first aid and health maintenance, and bivouac considerations. The pack animals may then be employed by the SOF unit conducting that MTX in any or all of the above mission profiles either as part of the Blue Force or as part of the OPFOR.

The Animal Packing and SOF Horsemanship courses were created to support USMC, US Army, and USSOCOM doctrine requiring the use of pack animals to support the conduct of mountain warfare operations. USMC and US Army history is full of examples where pack animals have been employed in the mission profiles outlined above in support of combat operations from Asia, to North Africa, to Europe, to the Caribbean. SOF have employed pack animals and equine mobility platforms in combat during the Global War on Terror and routinely do so in training during Geographic Combatant Commander and USSOCOM Theater Engagement and Cooperation efforts via Joint Combined Exchange Training (JCET) missions with partner nation forces in South America, Africa, Asia, and Europe. Both courses are in high demand from the MCMWTC’s conventional force and SOF training audiences and the MCMWTC is the only training venue in the DoD for such instruction.

The Veterinary Technician/Equine Health Instructor will assist the MCMWTC Stable Master and his staff in maintaining the MCMWTC’s herd of more than sixty equines (mules and horses).   This includes instructing USMC, US Army, US Navy, foreign militaries, Federal Law Enforcement, and SOF students in the anatomy, health concerns, and care of equines as part of the instructor staff of the MCMWTC’s Animal Packing and SOF Horsemanship courses.

The Veterinary SME will assist the MCMWTC Stable Master in preventative care of pack animals, austere and field medical treatment of pack animals, update and development of pack animal doctrine, update, and development of pack animal periods of instructions.

The Veterinary Technician is a key enabler assisting planning, maintain the health of the MCMWTC pack animals, and developing Tactics, Techniques and Procedures (TTPs) for conducting pack animal operations in support of strategic through tactical operations. The ability to effectively conduct pack animal operations while deployed as a component of a Joint Force conducting combat operations in the complex, compartmentalized terrain of a mountainous environment is an essential skill for deploying units. Particular attention must be paid to training leaders to understand the impact and application of pack animal and its direct effects on the tactical situation.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Oversee, conduct, and produce assignments requiring “performance” to “expert” level knowledge of principles associated with the integration of pack animals.
  • Provide direct support to and coordinate with MCMWTC Stable Master for the planning, preparation, and design of courses and scenarios within MTX.
  • Provide austere and field treatment of pack animals during the execution of instructor training, formal courses, and exercises.
  • Participate in curriculum development, teach classes, response cell development, and instruction and exercise support for related pack animal functions.
  • Conduct train the trainer courses with MCMWTC staff to ensure broader capable regarding preventative medical practices for the MCMWTC pack animals.
  • Coach, teach, and mentor the training audience on preventative medicine, field triage of pack animals and how to identify a healthy animal during a procurement.

Qualifications

Education

  • Board certified and registered as veterinary technician in California
  • Five years of experience working with pack animals to includes horses, donkeys and mules
  • Military instructor certification or instructor experience preferred
  • Military curriculum developer certification or experience is preferred

Experience

  • Experience with/ intimately familiar with pack animals and capable of preventative medicine as well as austere and field condition medical treatment of pack animals.
  • Experience and understanding of the capabilities associated with pack animals, i.e. weight capable of carrying, and possess a general understanding for the employment and practical application of them.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Proficient in computer applications such as Windows and MS Office.
  • Familiarity with MCTIMS is preferable.
  • Familiarity with operational coordination and facility management programs.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

Additional Information

 

  • Required to sit for extended periods of time and maintain focus.
  • Be able to lift 45 pounds.
  • Daily travel in the local area during the workday (including the use of a personal vehicle)
  • Required to work outside, at elevations above 6000 ft, in all kinds of weather, for extended periods of time.
  • Requires 0-15% travel.
  • Ability to work from a remote location.
