Job Description

Summary:

Great Lakes Science Center’s Generalist II helps keep the Science Center and S.S. William G. Mather Museum look and operate at its best for our guests and visitors, employees, volunteers, vendors, partners, and property. The F&S Generalist is responsible for general maintenance, basic repairs, and safety and security. This position will also complete tasks, assignments, and projects per the direction of the Facilities and Security Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Will assist with shipping and receiving and distribution of received good during scheduled work hours
  • Responsible for general cleaning of receiving dock, mechanical spaces, and emergency stairwells
  • Perform basic electrical maintenance including, but not limited: to replacing electrical receptacles and switches; knowledgeable with LOTO
  • Perform mechanical maintenance including HVAC filters, pump strainers, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, but not limited to hanging doors, replacing doorknobs, drywall repair, painting, general repairs, basic plumbing maintenance and repairs, etc.
  • Responsible for life safety equipment and will be trained as a competent person to operate all life safety devices including the fire panel
  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in such a manner as to ensure the safety of the individual, guests and visitors, other employees, volunteers, vendors, partners, and property
  • Will set up and strike special events and internal department setups
    • Will include setting up chairs and tables throughout the building, including outside
    • May include setup of dance floor, tents, bike racks, benches, etc., including outside
    • May be required to move furniture within the building to accommodate setups
  • Will carry and be responsible for an issued set of security keys, an assigned GLSC two-way radio, and the duty phone
  • Will open and close the building and Mather as needed
  • Will act as security when scheduled and as needed including first aid, emergency situations, and building evacuations; will complete security reports as necessary
  • Will follow and implement GLSC’s Emergency Action Plans
  • Will follow and report on a preventive maintenance schedule, working with the Facilities and Security Manager

Qualifications

Education and Work Experience Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or general education degree. Graduation from a vocational school in related field preferred.
  • At least one year of previous industrial, commercial, or residential maintenance experience.

 Additional Eligibility Qualifications (K/S/A):

  • Must be able to operate a computer to check emails, open and read itineraries and floor plans, and operate building preventative maintenance and work order platform
  • Must be able to complete word documents and electronic incident reports
  • Practical skill and knowledge in such areas as carpentry, plumbing, welding, and using various power and hand tools associated with such.
  • Willing to receive 3000 lbs. tow motor certification and vertical lift system and operate equipment
  • Flexibility to work weekends, late evenings, and early mornings a must.  Work hours and schedule are determined by the hours, event scheduling, and peak visitation periods of Great Lakes Science Center.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

Please note that this position requires occasionally working outdoors for prolonged periods in varied weather conditions, climbing narrow stairwells and ladders, and lifting heavy objects. This position requires extended periods of standing, stooping, and reaching to maintain and inspect equipment. This position works in environments with excessive noise requiring ear protection and occasional respiratory protection.  Candidate must be able to work closely and effectively with guests, vendors, contractors, and Science Center staff, all while being friendly and outgoing. Professional attitude and appearance are required. This position will comply with all Great Lakes Science Center policies and procedures to ensure a safe environment for colleagues and guests.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, write, and type. The employee frequently is required to stand on post; walk/respond in a professional manner to emergency calls, use hands to handle, and reach with hands and arms. This job works inside and outside, year-round.  Due to the historic nature of the Steamship, air conditioning is not available and this role may experience warm temperatures during the spring/summer operating season. This position requires the ability to lift items needed for maintenance and special events, up to 50 pounds; and be able to push or pull minimum of 200 pounds.

The F&S department is team orientated. The Generalist II should be self-motivated, be able to work independently, as part of the F&S team, and be able to multitask.

Expected Hours of Work:  

Friday through Tuesday - rotating open, mid, and closing shifts during the week. Hours and days may vary depending on the needs of the organization.  Due to the operations of the department and organization, F&S staff work during holidays. F&S staff will also flex their schedules when needed for the organization and for fellow staff members. Due to the operations of the building, the schedule may be adjusted as late as a week prior to the scheduled work date for this department.

Rate - $17 - $19/hour
