Job Description

Great Lakes Science Center seeks a creative and resourceful Coordinator to support day-to-day operations of a fast-paced, seven-day-a-week, evolving team of paid and unpaid (volunteer) staff, who are critical to facilitating high-quality experiences throughout our organization.

Staff/Schedule Coordination (Primary Responsibilities)

  • Develop an encouraging, supportive work environment that inspires dedication, enthusiasm, quality, and consistency among the staffing pool.
  • Manage schedules and communication to ensure timely, consistent, and trained staffing.
  • Support the managers in gaining a comprehensive understanding of staffing needs, issues, opportunities, and timing of staff placement. 
  • Assist in the planning, delivery, and evaluation of engaging programs and activities.
  • Work alongside the staffing pool to actively deliver visitor programs while modeling the highest standards in professionalism, inquiry based techniques, interpersonal communication, and guest service philosophy to create a superior visitor experience for all STEM Learning programs.
  • Provide formal and informal training frequently, and regularly seek new information and resources for improving training. Maintain training materials and documents for ongoing use.
  • Coordinate group arrival procedures across the organization.
  • Present daily and upcoming programming at Heads Up Meeting, prepare daily visitor guide insert for updates or corrections as needed and lead morning team meeting.
  • Communicate with Reservations staff to coordinate school and group reservations, including reserving museum educational spaces on Building Calendar and submitting itineraries for department programming.

Materials/Inventory/Programming (Secondary Responsibilities)

  • Familiar with and willingness to develop, learn, and present a variety of content matters from technology, physical science, biomedical, nanotechnology, maker, and more.
  • Pursue and maintain resources and contacts with potential volunteer referrals.
  • Follow safe practices and required to work with potentially dangerous chemicals, gases, corrosives and cryogenics.
  • Flexibly manage a wide variety of assignments and subject matter, including other duties as assigned by the manager.
  • Support manager in recruiting qualified applicants for open positions through a variety of mechanisms, including postings on the science center website, other recruitment websites, and participating in recruitment fairs.

Qualifications

Education and Work Experience Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent. Preferably a bachelor’s degree.
