Job Description

Working collaboratively with the Youth Development Manager and other staff, the STEM Instructional Leader will provide creative, interactive, hands-on instruction for youth in “Great Science Academy” (GSA) a Saturday-morning STEM education program for 6th to 12th grade youth. The successful candidate will research, design, prototype, and prepare informal science education projects and activities on assigned weekdays, and will work directly with GSA youth, leading programming on Saturdays.


Education and Work Experience Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or enrollment in a science,, education, youth development, or related field.
  • Experience teaching and/or working with children, with demonstrated creative methods in an informal or formal learning environment. 
  • Knowledge/interest in biomedical engineering, space/aeronautics, hydrology and design/innovation a plus. 
  • Knowledgeable of tiered curriculum, project based learning and other student centered pedagogy.
  • Experience with/willingness to learn various Maker technologies (3-D printer, laser cutter, etc.).

  • Strong ability to think fast/resolve problems creatively.
  • Excellent instructional/public speaking skills.
  • Ability to teach learners of varying ability levels and varying interests. 
  • Ability to maintain a safe and productive learning environment at all times.
  • Ability to operate Maker equipment (i.e., 3D printer, laser cutter, etc.) and various scientific tools/machines.
  • Ability to use vector graphics software (i.e., CorelDraw, Inkscape) highly desired.
  • Willingness to go “above and beyond” to serve, support, and motivate his/her assigned students.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite programs (Word/Excel/PowerPoint). 
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable car.

Additional Information

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:·

  • Researching, selecting and creating grade-appropriate STEM projects, activities, and lesson plans for scheduled sessions.
  • Conducting self learning as needed to enable accurate and appropriate content delivery;
  • Creating fun, interactive, and effective STEM learning opportunities for all students.
  • Prepping. Documenting, and/or revising all lesson plans (including research references, prototyping results, time requirements, etc.).
  • Demonstrating genuine care and concern for each student and his/her wellbeing while establishing high expectations for performance and engagement.
  • Conducting him/herself with high levels of professionalism and appropriateness at all times.
  • Maintaining classroom safety and disciplinary control.
  • Interacting with parents as needed on issues of progress, comprehension, discipline, etc. as directed by the manager.
  • Observing established program standards, policies, procedures.
  • Setting up and cleaning up instructional areas.
  • Administering session evaluation instruments as directed.
  • Supporting program administrative functions and recordkeeping including attendance and behavioral reports; participates in issue resolution with YD Manager as needed.
  • Collaborating with YD Manager and other program staff on curriculum development, program evaluation, project prototyping, and other activities as needed.
