Job Description

Granby Ranch will be hosting Ski Patrol Tryouts for the 2017-2018 Winter Season on Saturday, March 11 and on Saturday, March 18 starting at 10am.   All interested candidates should contact Patrol Dispatch at 970-887-5170 to register.

The tryouts will involve skiing 5 runs, looking for different skills that will be outlined in the briefing each morning. We will be evaluating skiers and snowboarders for skiing and riding ability as a prerequisite for application to be on the paid or volunteer staff for the Granby Ranch Mountain Patrol.


Ski Patrol Job Description:

SUMMARY:
The ski patroller provides effective care and evacuation of injured, sick and lost guests.  This position is responsible for patrolling the mountain in order to maintain a safe and enjoyable experience for Granby Ranch guests. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
•    Perform morning trail checks daily, including but not limited to, unmarked obstacles, downed rope closures, bamboo, fence lines, etc.
•    Perform general on-mountain safety work daily, including but not limited to, maintaining tower pads, bamboo, rope, race closures, traffic control, etc.
•    Provide care for accident cases and assist skiers/snowboarders off the mountain as needed.
•    Carry out instructions from dispatcher and supervisory patrol staff daily.
•    Complete all required training as directed by Director and Assistant Director of Mountain Patrol.
•    Perform end of day mountain sweep to ensure the mountain is clear.
•    Perform accurate and appropriate incident reporting for all incidents.
•    Participate in skier education programs.
•    Maintain good condition of personal ski equipment.
•    Adhere to all Granby Ranch and Mountain Patrol policies and procedures at all times.
•    Report any unsafe conditions regarding equipment, work area or company property immediately.        

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
•    Perform dispatch and all related activities, as requested.
•    Perform base patrol room duties and all related activities, as requested.
•    Participate in search and rescue and lift evacuations, as needed.
•    Transport skiers/snowboarders via toboggan and snowmobile, if proper snowmobile training, approval and Granby Ranch Driver's Standards have been met.
•    Assist with special event and race patrol, as needed.
•    Assist with and perform accident investigations, as needed.
•    Maintain a friendly, congenial, and helpful attitude while effectively dealing with guests and employees.
•    Maintain appearance standards as outlined in Granby Ranch Employee Handbook.
•    Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills & Ability:
•    Ability to work independently.
•    Ability to receive and act on written and verbal instructions from management.
•    Ability to handle and manage confidential information.
•    Ability to follow all established policies and procedures.
•    Strong organizational skills, and ability to follow through on all tasks.
•    Ability to work in a fast paced, potentially high pressure environment.

Education or Formal Training:
•    High School Diploma or equivalent required.
•    Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) Certification or higher required at time of hire.
•    CPR for the professional rescuer required at time of hire.
•    Previous training in sled handling and radio communications preferred, but not required.

Experience:

•    Must be an expert skier or snowboarder (3 to 5 years).

Working Environment:
•    Primarily work on skis or snowboard in various terrain on mountain, in a winter mountain environment with variable weather conditions.
•    Some indoor work for dispatch and base patrol room duties, as well as care for sick and injured.  

Physical Activities:

•    Standing, skiing or snowboarding, walking, sitting.
•    Balancing, kneeling, crouching, talking.
•    Lifting up to 90 pounds.
•    Carrying up to 90 pounds.
•    Pushing up to 150 pounds.
•    Pulling 90 pounds or more.
•    Climbing 20 to 50 foot ladders.
•    Must be able to hear ordinary conversations to gather important details from guests.
•    Must have good vision for all patrol activities.
•    Must be able to withstand extreme cold temperatures.
•    Must have fine motor dexterity.
•    Must be physically capable to perform strenuous exercise at 8,000-10,000 feet with adverse weather conditions.
