About the Global Opportunity Youth Network (GOYN): The Global Opportunity Youth Network (GOYN) is a multi-stakeholder initiative committed to creating place-based systems shifts for youth economic opportunity. Working with Anchor Partners situated in communities around the world, we work to create economic mobility for “Opportunity Youth” — young people aged 15-29 who are out of school, unemployed, or working in informal jobs. In Mombasa, the GOYN is hosted at Swahilipot Hub and works to improve youth employment outcomes by partnering with diverse stakeholders such as civil society, private sector, government, training organizations, etc. to identify the systems, policies, and incentives most needed to improve long-term youth employment outcomes and accelerate high-priority solutions through global grant funding and linkages to impact financing
Job Description
Overview of the Hospitality Lead Role: The hospitality and tourism (H&T) industry contribute to approximately 12% or $2.3 billion of Kenya’s GDP, with MSA contributing approximately 20%. The H&T industry is also one of the largest employers in MSA, employing approximately 10% of the workforce. Mombasa County’s greatest asset is its youth. 45% of Mombasa’s population is between the age of 15 and 34 years, with a median age of 25. The Opportunity Youth (OY) in Mombasa are well-suited to take up opportunities (formal and entrepreneurial) in the H&T industry but face unique societal, personal, and market challenges which need to be addressed to unlock their potential.
Position Overview: The Hospitality Manager will be tasked with building a robust Hospitality & Tourism pathway for OY including publishing research, develop learning agenda, and identify innovative H&T models for scale-up, in addition, S/he will play a critical role in engaging with different ecosystem players such as government, business associations, employers, training organizations and the private sector to push for a systemic shift in the Hotel and Hospitality sector. Together with partners such as employers and training organization S/he will implement a pilot phase providing training and employment linkage to 100 youth and broader engagement with over 500 youth and a working group to drive strategy, investment, and policy. GDI is seeking to recruit a Hospitality lead who will undertake the below roles and responsibilities:
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Research and Evidence Building (20%)
- Provide support to the Labour Market Manager to conduct demand mapping for current and future skills
- Engage employers and skilling organizations to co-design a training curriculum in reference demand mapped
- Publish reports and best practice case studies on OYs engagement in the Hospitality and Tourism pathway
Program Management (30%)
- In partnership with key stakeholders develop and drive strategies to recruits and training OYs
- Support placement and post-placement for OY through engaging employers and other stakeholders supporting Youth employment
- Develop project assessment protocols for monitoring and evaluation for GOYN Learning agenda
- Manage different teams, working groups, and other partners to ensure program goals are met
- Manage budget and funding channels for the hospitality pathway
Partnerships and Fundraising (40%)
- Develop and implement an approach to outreach and relationship management
- Develop and manage working group composed of various ecosystem players in the sector
- Support Employers Engagement Manager to generate partnership opportunities for job placement
- Identify and engage key allies to influence policy changes in the H&T industry
- Implement a variety of marketing strategies and campaigns for more partnerships, network with relevant funders to identify synergies, and develop winning proposals
- Develop funding proposals and submit them to potential donors
- Prepare quarterly budgets and reports to be shared with potential funders
Strategy (10%)
- Create and manage long-term goals for the Hospitality and Tourism pathway
- Develop an evaluation method to assess program strengths and identify areas for improvement
- Manage and implement interventions to ensure project goals are achieved
- Produce accurate and timely reporting of program status on a monthly, quarterly, and yearly basis
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or a minimum of 5 years equivalent experience in the hospitality industry, Education, Youth Affairs, Social Work, Human Services, Early Childhood Development, or a related field (preference for related experience in Mombasa context)
- Five years of progressive experience with demonstrated talent for forming and leading partnerships between diverse stakeholders in the hotel and tourism industry
- Experience in the hotel and tourism industry, specifically in developing strategic partnerships
- Strong research and data analysis capabilities
- Experience in community mobilization, project management, strategic planning, data gathering and analysis, communications, and/or organizational/systems dynamics
DESIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Strong interpersonal skills and desire to work with our stakeholders including youth at the base of the pyramid
- Ability to collaborate and contribute while working with people and organizations of diverse backgrounds, experiences, and cultures
- Grant writing, administration, and reporting skills strongly desired
- Possess strong skills in public speaking and public presentations
- Efficient, high-capacity self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced work environment
