About Gilbert + Tobin

Gilbert + Tobin is built on enduring values of excellence, trust, respect, integrity and good corporate citizenship. We are a leading firm with over 500 lawyers, trusted by our clients to navigate today’s increasingly complex world.

We are purpose-built for our clients’ most complex work - across transactions, disputes and regulation. Our partners are leaders in their fields, delivering the highest quality of legal advice and providing an exceptional edge for our clients. They also provide our lawyers the opportunity to work with and learn from them. We are innovators in the use of technology, redefining value and service in the legal industry.

Our open, merit-based culture attracts and inspires the best legal talent. We remain as determined as ever to be the best it’s possible to be.

The opportunity

This is a senior legal leadership role for a practising or recently practising lawyer who wants to apply legal judgement at scale: leading complex document and evidence workflows, supervising lawyers and managers, and shaping how a top-tier firm uses technology, analytics and market-leading Generative AI tools in live matters.

You will be a senior legal voice in how G+T designs, prices and delivers document- and information-intensive legal work across disputes, investigations, regulatory matters and transactions.

As the Melbourne GTDocs Senior Manager + Lawyer, you will report to the Head of GTDocs, lead and develop the Melbourne GTDocs team, work closely with the Sydney Senior Manager + Lawyer and Legal Informatics.

About GTDocs

GTDocs is an award-winning specialist team within Gilbert + Tobin dedicated to delivering document review, discovery, evidence review and related projects that are agile, cost effective, technology-enabled and consistently high quality.

GTDocs brings together legal judgement, project management, review methodology, eDiscovery, analytics, technology-assisted review, market-leading Generative AI tools and flexible resourcing. We work closely with partners, legal teams, clients, Legal Informatics, Legal Project Management and external provider teams to deliver defensible and commercially sensible outcomes on complex matters.

The team’s work is central to G+T’s strategic response to the changing legal services market. GTDocs helps convert matter delivery experience into better playbooks, quality assurance frameworks, pricing approaches, reporting models and repeatable GenAI-enabled evidence workflows.

About the role

You will be accountable for senior leadership of the Melbourne GTDocs team and for the effective delivery of complex document- and evidence-intensive legal work nationally. The role combines legal supervision, people leadership, client and partner engagement, commercial judgement, review design and continuous improvement.

More broadly, you will:

  • Lead, coach and develop the Melbourne GTDocs team.
  • Bring practising legal judgement to the design and supervision of review strategy, relevance, privilege, confidentiality, redaction, production, issue coding, evidence preparation and escalation workflows.
  • Scope, price, resource and manage complex reviews across disputes, class actions, regulatory investigations, competition and consumer matters, internal investigations, cyber incident responses, due diligence and transaction support.
  • Work directly with partners, senior lawyers and clients to translate legal issues into practical review protocols, assumptions, dashboards, quality controls, reporting and decision points.
  • Oversee first-level review, second-level review, quality assurance, privilege review, confidentiality review, redactions, production checks, consistency analysis and risk escalation.
  • Use review data to give clear, strategic insight on progress, review rates, responsiveness, privilege, quality outcomes, budget, completion risk and options for narrowing or accelerating review.
  • Partner with Legal Informatics and Legal Project Management to apply the right mix of people, process and technology, including Relativity and other eDiscovery platforms, analytics, technology-assisted review, Generative AI tools like Harvey and approved legal AI workflows.
  • Use, provide guidance on the use of, and embed market-leading Generative AI tools in review and evidence workflows, including prompt and workflow design, playbooks, guardrails, human-in-the-loop review, evaluation and escalation protocols.
  • Manage onshore and offshore resourcing, including allocation, supervision and quality control of internal team members, contractors and provider resources.
  • Create and maintain review playbooks, protocols, templates, training, matter debriefs and reusable process assets so that lessons from live matters improve future delivery.
  • Act as a senior Melbourne point of contact for GTDocs and help strengthen relationships with practice groups, clients and specialist teams.

About you

This role is designed for a senior lawyer who wants to stay close to substantive legal work while leading a scaled legal delivery capability. You may currently be a Senior Associate, Special Counsel, senior in-house lawyer, senior managed legal services lawyer, or equivalent. You will likely have substantial experience in disputes, investigations, regulatory work, class actions, competition, or another document-heavy practice area.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

  • Admission as a lawyer in Australia, or equivalent legal qualification, with a current or recent practising background. A current or eligible Australian practising certificate is strongly preferred.
  • Around 5+ years’ PQE or equivalent senior experience, with the judgement and credibility to work directly with partners, clients and senior legal teams.
  • Strong practising experience in disputes, investigations, regulatory matters, class actions, competition, cyber, due diligence, transaction review or other document- and evidence-intensive matters.
  • Experience leading teams of lawyers, paralegals, analysts or reviewers.
  • Deep understanding of legal review methodology, including protocols, relevance, issue coding, privilege, confidentiality, redactions, QA, sampling, consistency, production and escalation.
  • Familiarity with eDiscovery and review platforms such as Relativity, Nuix, Reveal, Canopy or equivalent, and a practical interest in market-leading Generative AI tools for legal work, including Harvey, AI functionality in review platforms or equivalent legal AI tools.
  • Confidence using, guiding others on and embedding Generative AI tools responsibly in a legal context, including confidentiality, privilege, professional responsibility, verification, auditability and appropriate human supervision.
  • Commercial acumen in scoping, assumptions, budgets, pricing, resourcing models, delivery economics and client value.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to make complex legal, technical and data-driven issues accessible to partners, clients and review teams.
  • A practical, calm and accountable leadership style, with the ability to set priorities, keep work moving under pressure and develop high-performing team members.
  • A continuous improvement mindset: you do not just run the current matter; you build the playbooks, metrics, training and workflows that make the next matter better.

What makes this role different

  • You will remain connected to complex legal work, but with broader influence than a traditional matter-by-matter fee earner role.
  • You will lead a Melbourne team and shape a national capability at the intersection of legal judgement, evidence strategy, legal technology, responsible GenAI adoption and AI-enabled service delivery.
  • You will work with partners and specialist teams on high-value matters where review quality, defensibility, speed, cost certainty and strategic insight matter.
  • You will help build the next generation of GTDocs delivery: better workflows, better supervision, better data, better pricing, better client experience and better use of market-leading Generative AI tools.
