R&D Laboratory Technician (12 Month FTC)
- Cambridge, UK
- Department: Lab R&D
- Office: Cambridge
Genomics England successfully led the world-leading 100,000 Genomes Project, which compared and analysed individuals’ genetic codes to help diagnose, treat and prevent illness.
We're now accelerating our impact, working with the NHS to further develop and embed genomic healthcare and research in Britain. Our next chapter involves working with patients, doctors, scientists, government and industry to improve genomic testing, and help researchers access the health data and technology they need to make new medical discoveries and create more effective, targeted medicines for everybody.
We have an opportunity for an R&D Laboratory Technician to join our organisation on a 12 month FTC to perform molecular biology assay development and execution, including NGS library preparation and sequencing experiments, using your expertise in sequencing technology.
As a Laboratory Technician at Genomics England, your day to day will consist of designing and performing experiments such as DNA sample preparation and QC, followed by library preparation and sequencing for long read technologies. You'll be responsible for keeping a detailed record and tracking of samples throughout the preparation and sequencing process. You'll have the opportunity to collaborate with the R&D team and partners to optimise sequencing protocols and automation of lab procedures as well as to analyse sequencing performance, support troubleshooting efforts and resolve issues.
As well as this, you will be ensuring general maintenance of the lab and instrumentation and preparing data and reports for technical meetings.
Skills & Experience for Success
It's essential for this position that you have postgraduate experience working in a lab including hands-on experience of molecular biology techniques.
We anticipate that the ideal candidate will have:
- Post-graduate experience working in a molecular biology lab, processing multiple batches of samples.
- A solid background in molecular biology, and a keen interest in cutting edge sequencing technologies applied to clinical samples.
- Practical experience with DNA/RNA purification and handling, NGS library preparation and whole genome sequencing or relevant nucleic acid based assays.
- Experience of long read sequencing
