Job Description

Assistant Camp Directors play a vital role in creating a positive camp experience for campers, their families and our Summer Staff. As a member of the Camp Leadership team, you will support the smooth operation of a single camp location— supervising staff, planning programs, delighting parents, and so much more!

YOU WILL

  • Oversee the daily operations of camp, working closely with the Camp Director to ensure a joy-filled program.
    • Flex your creative problem-solving to effectively prioritize throughout each day.
    • Maintain a constant eye toward camper safety and customer experience.
    • Act as the “manager on duty” any time that the Camp Director is not onsite.
    • Own daily operational and administrative tasks as assigned to support a successful camp program.
    • Act as one of two “key holders,” performing opening and closing duties as scheduled by the Camp Director.
  • Courageously lead by example with humor and optimism.
    • Exemplify student-centered leadership by centering the camper experience in all aspects of your work
    • Balance fun with safety and operational excellence
    • Coach staff to connect with students across diverse age groups, ability levels and support needs.
  • Assist the Camp Director in leading the camp staff team, and directly supervise a team of Summer Operations Interns.
    • Support the CD in managing and coaching staff on camp policies and procedures.
    • Provide feedback on classroom instruction and behavior management.
    • Train staff on our inclusive, restorative justice approach to camper behavior management.
  • Assist in managing camp rotations and provide support as needed.
    • Be ready to wear many hats, and enter each situation with finesse and determination.
    • Provide coverage, stepping in to fill staff duties when team members are out.
    • Lead camper groups and/or facilitate Galileo curriculum as needed.
    • Regularly assess to ensure Galileo curriculum is facilitated as designed, and provide timely feedback to staff.
  • Contribute to and lead daily camp activities.
    • Manage check-in/check-out procedures to ensure efficiency and accurate daily attendance.
    • Lead the team by example to provide exemplary customer service to each camper, family, and guardian at all times.
    • Encourage collaboration among staff to plan and participate in all camp activities.
    • Promote a positive camp experience at all times with your energy and camp spirit.
    • Actively participate in camp chants, songs, and perform skits in opening and closing ceremonies.
  • Provide excellent customer service and support to families.
    • Communicate with families as needed about their camper’s experience.
    • Coach staff on best practices for professional communication.
    • Resolve escalated matters, which may be beyond the expertise of an entry-level staff member.
  • Maintain safe environments for all campers and provide leadership and camp spirit to all campers.
    • Constantly assess engagement and group dynamics, as well as the needs of individual campers.
  • Develop your management skills as the owner of your camp's Extended Care program.
    • Independently manage the Extended Care program (including staff), with mentorship from the Camp Director.
    • Maintain operations for a smooth Extended Care experience for campers who join us before/after regular camp hours
    • Act as the “manager on duty,” taking full responsibility for camper and family experience, staff development, etc.

Qualifications

  • College coursework in Education or Child Development preferred, but not required
  • 2+ years of work experience in K-8 education, or a combination of relevant education and work experience
  • 1+ years of demonstrated leadership experience, supervisor experience is preferred
  • Experience caring for, supervising, coaching, and/or mentoring children in groups of 15+
  • Availability to consistently work [Full-Time / Part-Time] hours, Monday - Friday, for the duration of camp.
    • For consistency and camper safety, we prioritize applicants who are able to commit to working for the full duration of camp (4-8 continuous weeks, depending on the camp location).
    • Applicants with less than 4 continuous weeks of availability will not be considered for this role.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus, but not required
  • Ability to balance multiple tasks while working with a sense of urgency and enthusiasm.
  • Ability to complete all pre-camp tasks, including background checks, state-mandated certifications, electronic onboarding paperwork and online training prior to the start of camp.
  • Valid CPR/First Aid certification OR ability to become certified prior to the start of camp
  • Must be 18 years of age by May 13th, 2024

SCHEDULE

All camps operate Monday - Friday. Staff are also required to attend two pre-camp set-up days, which vary by site and may be scheduled between Thursday - Sunday before camp opens. Shifts vary by position and location and can start as early as 7:00 a.m. and end as late as 6:00 p.m.
