Job Description
At General Dynamics Mission Systems-Canada our engineers work on a range of programs to both broaden their experience while developing a diverse set of technical skills. We currently have an opportunity for an Optics Design/Integration Engineering Analyst within our Land and Joint Solution business area. This is a unique opportunity that focuses on a range of optical sensor and Smart Display Unit (SDU) programs, providing design support services for Optical subsystems such as Day/Thermal imaging and LCD/backlighting systems.
This position has a range of areas of focus for responsibility:
- Performs Optical architecture simulation and analyses for new product development including:
- Sensor lens-detector-video transport-display performance
- LCD light-source-light guide-reflector-diffuser-LCD cell-Touch Screen design
- Optical system performance analysis and measurement including:
- Target Detection-Recognition-Identification performance assessment
- Display metrology such as sunlight readability, chromaticity, viewing cone, uniformity, reflectance, etc.
- Selects/ specifies optical components to meet combat system optical performance requirements including:
- Imaging sensors and lens (visible through thermal),
- LCDs, touchscreens, backlight components and LEDs
- Defines, estimates and schedules tasks and carries them out in accordance with project cost and schedule constraints
- Authors technical proposal content demonstrating solutions comply with imaging and electronic display sub-system requirements
- Provides technical guidance to engineers and/or technicians working within a common Integrated Project Team context
- Assist Supply Chain Management with procurement of complex optical components
- Oversee and coordinate the development of Source Control Drawings for optical components
- Monitor production statistical process control parameters for optical products including Cp, Cpk and control limits
- Acts as a technical point of contact for customer optical performance enquiries
- Leads internal and external customer technical design reviews of optical technologies
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Physics, Electrical Engineering or applicable technical or scientific discipline.
- Minimum 5 years work experience and at least three years of relevant optical engineering experience
- Experience writing requirements and specifications and proposals
- Experience with optical test equipment such as imaging photometer, spectroradiometer, optical bench and various other instruments
- Experience in imaging sensors for robotics, machine vision, AI, or autonomous vehicles
- Understands and applies industry best practices and guidelines to technical reviews and inspections/audits
- Has a thorough understanding of the product development life cycle for military electro-optical systems
- Solid understanding the Integrated Product Development approach and the role of the Integrated Product Team
- Lead and help build consensus and bring out the best in other team members. Acts as a positive role model to more junior members of team
- Must be able to obtain and maintain Canadian Security Clearance and a positive Controlled Goods Assessment. Eligibility to work in Canada either as a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident.
- Applicants may be required to meet additional security requirements in order to gain access to technical data, classified areas or information that is subject to international regulations.
Ideally you will also have some knowledge/experience in one of the following:
- Master’s degree or equivalent would be an asset
- Knowledge of Video I/Fs: CVBS RS-170A, CCIR, VGA Component Video, DVI, HDMI, SDI standards
- Knowledge and understanding of Video processing techniques including de-interlacing, Frame Rate Conversion, scaling and image fusion such as alpha-blending and image stitching
- Knowledge and understanding of Mechanical design and Design For Manufacturing of electro-optical systems
- Familiarity with Military standards especially for video and Human-Machine-Interface standards
- Experience with Specialty Engineering areas (Environmental, EMI, Reliability, Maintainability)
- Experience with Matlab, Minitab, Night Vision
