Job Description

The General Dynamics Mission Systems-Canada is currently hiring for an Analyst, Systems Engineering to specialize in Satellite Communications (SATCOM). In this role, you will be responsible for engineering and technical support with day-to-day operations and maintenance of the Mercury Global Anchor Stations (MGAS) in Ontario, Nova Scotia and British Columbia, and Deployable Terminals. When the individual is not traveling, the position follows a Hybrid working model with a mix of home and on-site work.

This opportunity would be ideal for someone passionate about working with RF systems as well as experience with commercial and/or military SATCOM networks.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide engineering expertise for MGAS locations and Network Management System (NMS) infrastructure;
  • Design, cost, implement and test engineering changes to complex RF systems;
  • Identify and resolve MGAS In-Service Support (ISS) technical problems;
  • Lead the development and improvement of MGAS ISS procedures and process improvement based upon Lessons Learned;
  • Recommend technically accurate and feasible solutions requiring a review for soundness of judgment to correct any MGAS deficiencies;
  • Liaise with customer Project Management Office and/or equipment management team on matters pertaining to the contract;
  • May act as the technical point of contact for customers or other groups, where the nature of the discussion is SATCOM or other technical aspects relating to RF.
  • Manage RF hardware such as LNAs, networking hardware; LNBs, up/down converters, antenna systems, Solid State Power Amplifiers (SSPA), traveling wave tube amplifiers (TWTA), modulators and switches, and complex antenna systems and subsystems
  • Responsible for operations of Power (diesel, UPS and distribution systems), HVAC and supervisory and control systems;
  • Complete records, monthly reports, and support updates to inventory records;
  • Ensure all safety requirements for ongoing tasks are adhered to;
  • Recognize the inadequacies or non-existence of process and establish them where necessary;
  • Collect, analyze and summarize MGAS performance data, producing regular verbal and written reports;
  • Identify areas of additional ISS scope and explore new opportunities for increasing GDMS-C’s presence in the satellite/communications business area;
  • Provide support to other engineers and management; and
  • Supervision of contractors or customers working at the location is sometimes required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electronics/Telecommunications Engineering or other applicable scientific/technical discipline or the equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Relevant work experience as a SATCOM engineer;
  • Experience with a variety of RF test equipment such as Spectrum & Network analyzers, signal generators, power meters and rad meters; and
  • Experience with setting up and configuring VSATs, Gateways and hub installations.

Assets:

  • Experience with commercial and/or military SATCOM networks; and
  • Experience working at heights on boom lifts, extension and step ladders.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Understanding of SATCOM theory, including Earth Station Design, RF theory, RF terminal design and optimization, Baseband equipment configuration and operation;
  • Familiarity with RF uplink and downlink components including high power amplifiers, up-converters, down-converters, supervisory and control systems, routers, switches.
  • Team orientation and team accountability;
  • Familiarity with RF systems, especially satellite based RF systems is an asset;
  • Knowledge of power distribution and HVAC systems is an asset; and
  • Demonstrate flexibility and the ability for quick and knowledgeable response to technical and customer service related issues which arise while in the field.

 This job includes physical/sensory requirements such as but not limited to:

  • Use of ladders and stairs;
  • Carrying, pushing, and pulling equipment of up to 50 lbs;
  • Kneeling, crouching, bending, squatting, reaching, and crawling to access equipment and components;
  • Working outdoors in different weather conditions; and
  • Use of colour vision to identify electrical components.

Working Conditions:

  • Overtime and on-call on a routine basis with potential short notice dispatches to BC or NS locations;
  • A valid driver’s license is required;
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Canadian Security Clearance and a positive Controlled Goods Assessment. Eligibility to work in Canada either as a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident; and
