Job Description

Managing Partner - Funema Ventures Fund I

 

We are stimulating economic development in African last-mile communities using a Pan African mission-driven fund designed to deliver catalytic value to the Founders we partner with, high-impact solutions to the communities they are active in and solid financial returns to the Limited Partners supporting our mission.

The global VC market has grown exponentially over the past three years and so far, Africa has not been left out, however, it is our mission to guide this growth into solving base of the pyramid problems so latent opportunities hidden from conventional radars could eventually crystalise and precipitate to the top for relevance and participation on the global scene. We have done this successfully with companies in our portfolio.

As Managing partner, you will be leading the fundraising with your compensation structured as 25% of management fees + 20% of carried interest.

Your primary responsibilities pre-fund closing are:

  • Leading our fundraising execution by adding and managing HNWI / Institutional Investors expectation

  • Develop, maintain and grow an actionable mutual network of Private Equity & Impact funds

  • Marketing the fund to HNWIs, Family Offices, Endowments and Foundations

  • You should be comfortable with driving business development activities of the fund such as direct contact & warm calls that will ensure the success of our capital raise in accordance with our organisational strategy.

 

Your primary responsibilities post-fund closing are:

  • Work with our Venture Building team in identifying & investing in companies from our Startup Ecosystem that are ready for capital injection and aligned with our fund expectations

  • Building & maintaining a global corporate network of Fortune 500 Companies who could be strategically positioned as customers with off-taker capacity for our companies and strategic alliances for entering new markets

  • Work with our Venture Building team in providing deep, post funding hands-on support to our portfolio companies

  • Build and nurture a global network of DFIs, PE & CVC funds and M&A Groups that could come in at the growth stage of our companies.

  • Build and nurture a network of local Angel investors, Angel Syndicates and family offices that could co-invest with us in early rounds of our companies

  • Work with our Venture Building team in developing exit strategies for our Portfolio companies across their different stages

  • Own due diligence and drive deal execution in collaboration with our Legal partner.

Qualifications

5+ years of experience developing the African startup ecosystem either as an Angel Investor, working in an impact investment company, ecosystem architect or builder with a proven track record or an entrepreneurial experience.

  • Demonstrated experience with fundraising

  • Demonstrated experience in leading or participating in forming strategic corporate alliances and executing M&A deals in Africa or other emerging markets.

  • You must be driven by an unquenchable passion to solve ecosystem problems underlying the poverty reality in Africa. This value is non-negotiable and a deal-breaker for us.

  • Your must be able to work without supervision and you should have designed or developed a strong personal organisational & time management skills that makes you a high performer.

  • We are fanatical about documentation, due diligence and being methodical in solving problems. We work very well with fans of these same values.

  • Good knowledge of startup financials, deal modelling as well as quantitative analysis. We need a keen eye monitoring our fund performance metrics.

  • Excellent communication skills so you can speak well when necessary. Excellent writing skills so you can communicate our values to the ecosystem as needed. Our language is simple, concise and relatable - we might dabble a bit with esoteric terms but only when we can’t help ourselves.

  • Ability to build, recruit, lead, retain and mentor your team of high performing Partners and Principals as we grow over the next five years.
