Job Description

General Statement of Duties:  Responsible for work involving the operation, maintenance and repair of a variety of heating, air conditioning, refrigeration and other mechanical equipment of a major multi-purpose facility.  This employee will perform the duties of an engineer and, in addition, is responsible for planning, assisting and supervising all plant operations.  Initiative and independent judgment are required in the planning and supervision of all routine operations, but unusual operating problems or matters involving departmental policy are subject to administrative advice and review.

Areas of Responsibility:

  • Supervises the maintenance of standard and special work records and reports and related work as required.
  • Starts pumps and adjusts valves, checks equipment for proper operating levels and settings.
  • Operates and regulates compressors, fans, radiators, water heaters and water softeners; cleans and maintains pumps, screens, filters, strainers, pipes and other equipment.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on all building systems
  • Performs miscellaneous repair work incidental to operating duties.
  • Maintains and repairs electrical, refrigeration, HVAC, plumbing, painting and other equipment and materials as necessary.
  • Establishes implements and enforces plant safety regulations and requirements.
  • Computer programming of building management systems.
  • Keeps records of operations, temperatures, pressures, fuel consumed, etc.
  • Maintains clean work areas.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications:  Thorough knowledge of the methods, principles and practices involved in the operation and maintenance of boilers, engines, emergency generators, chillers auxiliary equipment, ventilating, air-conditioning and refrigeration systems, and similar equipment and machinery.  Skilled in the use of standard hand tools used in the repair of boilers, pipes, valves, motors and related equipment and the ability to plan and supervise a variety of repair tasks.  Ability to prepare and maintain complete operating records and reports as required.  Considerable experience in the operation and maintenance of boilers, motors and various types of heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration systems. 

Demonstrated knowledge of building maintenance functions and various technical areas including carpentry, electrical, refrigeration, HVAC, plumbing, painting, and cleaning; technical knowledge of various tools and equipment needed to perform tasks in these areas; able to work flexible hours including evenings, weekend, and holidays .  Previous experience in a similar facility environment and/or a technical degree in engineering or a trade school/vocational certificate along with all necessary licenses required by state law.  Reasonable accommodations will be considered for those with disabilities.
