The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan serves as a common solicitor, storehouse and distributor of food on behalf of its Partner Agencies which are non-profit, charitable organizations serving those in need.

Today the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan provides over 25 million pounds of food each year to those in need through more than 415 partner agencies. Partner Agencies consist of local soup kitchens, shelters, and food pantries who strive to feed the more than 300,000 people in eastern Michigan who are food insecure. The excellent relationships established within the Food Bank’s 22 county service area and throughout the state has allowed for numerous programs and initiatives to help fight hunger.

Job Description

The Vice President of Development & Communications is responsible to lead the fundraising, marketing, and volunteer leadership activities for the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan. The VP will coordinate diverse streams of philanthropic activity to maximize funding that will allow the Food Bank to meet its annual budgetary goals and follow its strategic plan. The Food Bank's marketing and communication efforts will align with its mission to reduce hunger and will create positive exposure and recognition within the entire 22 county service area.

Qualifications

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Oversee the successful development and implementation of both short and long-term fundraising strategies that match the Food Bank's vision, mission, values, and budgetary requirements.

• Oversee administrative departmental activities such as budget creation and monitoring, Strategic Plan and departmental reporting to Feeding America and the President as required.

• Provide direction and oversight while evaluating the effectiveness of all the Food Bank's fundraising activities including: major gifts, planned giving, annual campaign, grants, direct mail, corporate sponsorships, and special events.

• Evaluate effectiveness and ROI for all donor contact points to maximize staff efficiencies and ensure a donor centered relationship.

• Create a culture of philanthropic giving both internally and externally.

• Identify, develop, and implement strategies to cultivate prospective donors, while also recognizing and stewarding current and past supporters.

• Build community awareness through a multifaceted marketing and social media campaign that establishes the Food Bank as a leader in its field.

• Oversee the branding, messaging, and communications of the Food Bank, both internally and externally.

• Assume a case load of Major Gift prospects coordinated by the Major Gifts Manager.

• Maintain accurate case management records and donor stewardship documentation, per department policies.

• Collaborate with the President to strengthen and engage volunteer board leadership.

• Oversee the preparation of agendas, reports, department metrics, and materials for Board, Development Committee, or administrative meetings.

• Ensure volunteer activities provide a positive and consistent experience with opportunities for further engagement and relationship building.

• Oversee the recruitment, training, supervision, and mentoring of department staff to lead a motivated and high-performing team.

• Build and maintain appropriate external relationships in alignment with Feeding America and the Food Bank Council of Ml.

• Ensure compliance with rules and regulations from oversight or governing agencies, such as Feeding America and AIB.

• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Knowledge and Education and Work Experience:

•  Master's degree or related years of experience required.

•  Course work or professional certification in related field preferred.

•   Minimum of seven years in a development or marketing role (preferably with a non­ profit) and five years in a management role.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

•  Demonstrated experience working directly with a Board of Directors, high-level donors and/or volunteers in cultivating relationships.

•  Strong analysis, planning, team building, and communication skills.

•   Genuine appreciation of FBEM's mission and the ability to communicate it.

•   Demonstrated leadership and excellent interpersonal skills.

•   Ability to handle multiple priorities and work independently.

•   High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office and Donor Data Base.

•   Ability to interact with the public and the media in a positive manner, in both large and small groups.

Additional Information

Working Conditions:

Regularly uses close and distance vision.  Works at a desk and computer screen for extended periods of time.

Conditions may include working indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions as needed, working extended or irregular hours, and will travel to/from events as needed.

Must be physically able to assist with event setup and breakdown, including lifting up to 30 lbs. regularly and 50 lbs. on occasion.
