Company Description

Fair and Just Prosecution (FJP) is looking for a full-time Chief of Staff (CoS). The CoS will work on supporting the mission of the organization and help oversee and support the work of the Executive Director and senior team. Fundamentally, we are seeking someone who loves to make things work, directly and through others, and who has the skills and experience to do that in FJP’s context. Equally critical is a passion for and commitment to FJP’s mission and work -a desire to see change in the criminal legal system and to work with elected leaders who are seeking to implement those reforms. 

Who We Are 

Great strides have been made over the past few years in promoting criminal justice reforms that recognize that prior “tough on crime” and incarceration-driven practices don’t always produce safer or healthier communities. New thinking has started to permeate the justice system and has prompted proactive and prevention-oriented strategies.  

Against that backdrop, a new generation of reform-minded state and local elected prosecutors committed to changing their office culture and promoting a less punitive approach to addressing crime has come into office. Recently elected DAs in geographic areas ranging from Los Angeles, St. Louis, and Philadelphia to smaller rural communities are pushing back against the “law and order/tough on crime” rhetoric of past decades and elevating a national conversation around the importance of a fair, equitable and right-sized justice system.  

FJP brings together these reform-minded and innovative elected prosecutors as part of a network of leaders committed to promoting a justice system grounded in fairness, equity, compassion, and fiscal responsibility. 

Job Description

What You Will Do 

Areas of responsibility and focus will include these essential duties and responsibilities.  You will: 

  • Offer thoughtful advice and counsel to the Executive Director and the senior team on a variety of matters, including strategy, personnel, operations, and management 
  • Help address and trouble shoot ad hoc issues that arise, and develop and implement smart solutions 
  • Help resolve administrative, operational and strategic issues and matters on behalf of the Executive Director and organization 
  • Routinely communicate high-level personnel and other internal issues to the Executive Director, making recommendations on next steps and assisting with problem solving 
  • Direct and manage special initiatives and oversee the flow of work and specified ongoing projects 

Organizational Effectiveness 

  • Help oversee, work with and support the operations of the organization's senior leadership team 
  • Work with others in leadership to help identify and recruit dynamic top-level talent to join the FJP team 
  • Ensure smooth communications throughout the organization and help to ensure that work and projects are moving forward and are reflecting the high standards of the organization 
  • Ensure the highest performance standards are routinely applied across the organization 
  • Work with the Deputy Director, COO and others on the team to help oversee projects, ongoing planning efforts and efficient operations 

Other Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Model the highest standards of performance, integrity and work ethic 
  • Work with others on the leadership team to help manage special projects, administrative and financial staff and ongoing workstreams 
  • Work with the COO and Deputy Director to help manage grants, budget and future resource growth 
  • Guide and monitor the organization’s progress in meeting goals and tracking metrics 
  • Work with the Deputy Director and others on the leadership team to engage in routine check-ins, provide feedback, and help manage progress of staff in ongoing work and projects  
  • Oversee, in collaboration with the leadership team, hiring activities including identifying “must-have qualities” and guiding interviews and selection of needed personnel 
  • Work with others on the leadership team to oversee and support orientation and onboarding of new staff 
  • Assist in shaping and delivering donor pitches, funder and external partner briefings, and help with preparing and finalizing grant and funder requests and reporting 
  • Work with the Deputy Director and COO to ensure FJP is meeting all requirements related to operations, human resources, and personnel  

Qualifications

Who You Are   

First and foremost, you have a strong commitment to reforms in prosecution and changes to the criminal legal system and the ability to reimagine the role and function of prosecutive leaders in moving away from past “tough on crime” approaches.  Additionally, you have the following background, experience, and skills/abilities:  

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE 

  • Bachelor’s degree, with a higher-level degree (JD, MA, MBA, etc.) a plus and a minimum of 5 years of management experience at a similarly situated organization, however, we value diverse educational and experiential backgrounds and an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will also be considered
  • Experience in criminal justice, nonprofit or policy advocacy organizations preferred 
  • Experience in grantmaking/applications, budget oversight or development, organizational management, and process development/improvement

What Else You Should Know 

Organizational Relationships 

Reports to Executive Director or her designee and works closely with the senior leadership team, including the Deputy Director, COO and other senior staff and team members. 

Physical Demands 

Must be able to sit at a computer for extended periods of time. Some travel required. The project requires extensive computer and telephone time and usage, research and writing. Light lifting up to 10 pounds may be needed. 

Work Environment 

In non-pandemic times, the position can work remotely or may be able to work out of a New York office. Post-pandemic, some travel will be required, at least three or four times per year. While on travel, the Chief of Staff will work from airports, hotel rooms, offices or space of other organizations or bodies.
