Tech Lead - Expertly

  • Full-time

Company Description

Expertly (shopexpertly.com) is a game-changing social selling platform for freelance hair and beauty professionals. Our app gives beauty pros the tools to recommend products to their clients through e-commerce, allowing customers to purchase products from the experts who understand their particular needs and routine. Our mission is to empower freelancers to earn more from their passion and better serve their customers.

The opportunity is clear: while 96% of people do not trust influencers, 69% of people trust hairdressers to tell them the truth. On top of this, we know that freelancers are the future in beauty: last year 57% of hairdressers and 54% of beauticians were self-employed, with a growing trend that has been rapidly accelerated by COVID. Without Expertly, freelancers struggle to earn from product sales outside of the traditional retail environment of a salon. Given that salons earn around 25% of their revenue from retail, freelancers are missing out on a large portion of overall income.

Expertly is capitalising on this, harnessing the growing trend towards multi-brand social selling, and supercharging it with a unique go-to-market strategy by partnering with L’Oréal. We have a growing freelancer community, brand partnerships, confirmed paid pilots, and getting ready to launch with our MVP app in the next month. We have an experienced team and are supported by our investors Founders Factory and L’Oréal. Founded in 2020, we’re just getting started!

We are currently working remotely, but have desks at the Founders Factory HQ in Kensington when we are permitted to return to offices. While it is important to the Expertly team to have in-person meetups, we are open to this role being partially or mostly remote.

Job Description

We are looking for an experienced and hungry Tech Lead to join our team as we enter the market and begin to scale. As our first technical hire and as a lead, we expect you to take a hands-on coding role and to own the strategic architecture from day one.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Building our software, taking us beyond our MVP to a product experience that our customers and partners cannot live without
  • Overseeing of all aspects of engineering including technical strategy, best practice implementation, and full-stack of web and mobile development
  • Making key decisions on technical architecture and platform development
  • Defining technical support processes and ensure customer support for technical issues
  • Working closely with the CEO and CMO on the overall product roadmap
  • Leading the tech team as we make new hires in the future

  • Our beauty pro customers are not tech-savvy, and need a seamless and intuitive user experience
  • We need to build API integrations with external ecommerce sites in order to add more brand partners to our platform
  • Our beauty pros will sell better if we help them - we should surface what's resonating with their clients (i.e. our end-consumers), for example suggested products
  • Expertly must work seamlessly across both mobile app and web app experiences
  • Partnerships and integrations with third party software are going to be key; we don't need - or want - to build everything from scratch
  • E-commerce is just the beginning of what will bring to our freelancer community: our future roadmap includes features like bookings and CRM

Qualifications

  • Experience building consumer or marketplace platforms
  • Skill and experience in using Javascript - Back and Front End
  • Background in iterating and ideating a MVP or early-stage products
  • Expertise when it comes to setting up and running a tech strategy
  • Confidence in communicating openly and frequently
  • Ambition to grow into a CTO role and build a team under you
  • Passion for supporting freelancers/gig workers or for the beauty sector
  • War stories from a previous startup

Additional Information

  • A career-defining opportunity as we scale
  • Ambitious, passionate team alongside you
  • Breadth of responsibilities and ability to make a big impact as an early joiner to the business
  • Exposure to a fantastic community of like minded entrepreneurial technologies through Founders Factory
  • Mentorship and hands-on support from Founders Factory and others in our network
  • Free 2x weekly lunches at Founders Factory and other perks while we’re in the program
