Job Description

The Corporate Counsel will join a world-class legal department and will be responsible for providing advice and strategies on labor and employment matters in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Central America, and South America.  The Corporate Counsel role will support the Vice President and Associate General Counsel Labor and Employment.  Primary responsibilities include:

  • Supporting and advising business teams, including executives, managers, employee relations, information services, and operations regarding compliance with existing labor and employment laws and new legislation

  • Advising on issues such as discipline, non-competition, redundancies, leave, disability, contingent workers, equity, contractor management, anti-discrimination, wage and hour, and union/labor relations

  • Providing representation and/or management of matters before human rights tribunals and agencies

  • Conducting and managing internal investigations

  • Drafting policies

  • Drafting service provider, commission, bursary, non-compete, employment, and settlement agreements

  • Assisting with privacy compliance in relation to employee data

  • Developing and delivering client training on compliance with labor and employment laws

  • Leading responses to governmental inquiries into employment/labor related matters  

  • Managing litigation, outside counsel, and budgets

  • Performing project management work for legal projects 

  • Formulating efficient resolution strategies to meet business objectives

  • Providing effective cross-functional support inside and outside of the legal department

  • Assisting in developing and implementing departmental goals and initiatives

Qualifications

  • A Juris Doctorate Degree or equivalent

  • Licensed/authorized to practice law and in good standing  

  • 3-5 years of experience in a top law firm preferred

  • In-house experience working in the law department of a Fortune 500 company highly desirable, but not required

  • Strong analytical, interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills

  • Excellent organizational skills with high level of attention to detail and accuracy

  • Excellent business judgment and ability to work independently

  • Proficient or fluent Spanish preferred

  • Travel expected 10% to 30%
