Job Description
Join EAG Laboratories as a Scientist specializing in Thermal Analysis and Materials Characterization.
In this role, you will perform hands-on materials characterization, interpret and report high-quality analytical data, and work directly with clients to support real-world technical investigations.
You will discuss thermal and mechanical analysis data and experimental design with clients, connecting analytical results to broader materials, manufacturing, reliability, and product development challenges.
Our clients include leading technology companies, consumer product manufacturers, biotech companies, and aerospace suppliers working in the early phases of product development. Scientists in our Materials Characterization group operate advanced analytical instrumentation and collaborate closely with peers to understand technical problems, determine the appropriate analytical approach, and provide meaningful insight into material behavior and performance.
We are particularly interested in scientists with extensive, multi-year hands-on experience with one or more of the following techniques:
- DMA (Dynamic Mechanical Analysis)
- TMA (Thermomechanical Analysis)
- Rheometry
Experience with additional thermal characterization techniques, including DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) and TGA (Thermogravimetric Analysis), is highly desired, as is experience with other polymer analysis techniques such as GPC (Gel Permeation Chromatography), UV-Vis spectroscopy and FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy).
We are looking for scientists who are comfortable managing all stages of the analytical process, including experimental design, sample preparation, selecting and optimizing test conditions, operating and troubleshooting instrumentation, acquiring and interpreting data, and writing technical reports. More importantly, you should be able to look beyond the data itself and explain what the results mean for a client's material, process, or product.
This position requires a strong technical foundation in materials science, polymer science, chemistry, or a related discipline, along with practical experience understanding the thermal, mechanical, viscoelastic, physical and chemical characteristics of materials.
A typical day on the Materials Characterization team may include:
- Processing and interpreting previously acquired thermal or mechanical analysis data and writing technical reports.
- Planning upcoming analyses and determining appropriate testing conditions.
- Preparing samples, setting up instrumentation, and acquiring new data.
- Evaluating thermal transitions, dimensional changes, mechanical response, or rheological behavior based on the analytical technique being used.
In parallel, you may also:
- Participate in internal group meetings to coordinate instrument use and meet client deadlines.
- Speak directly with customers about previous results or questions regarding future analyses.
- Work with EAG's commercial team and customers to understand technical problems and determine how our analytical capabilities can help address them.
You will also likely work on longer-term projects, such as:
- Developing or improving analytical methods for new or challenging materials.
- Producing technical or marketing materials or contributing to scientific papers.
- Working with internal support teams and instrument vendors to troubleshoot and optimize equipment.
- Developing expertise in adjacent materials characterization techniques.
These activities require strong communication and collaboration with your colleagues. You'll often have multiple client projects moving at the same time, so organization, communication, and teamwork are important. This is a fast-moving environment where scientists share expertise, help one another solve problems, and work together to help our clients meet their technical goals. Along the way, you'll also get to do a lot of interesting science.
Qualifications
This position works with companies that deal with defense-related activities and is subject to ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations).
All considered applicants must be U.S. Persons as defined by ITAR: U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. “Green Card Holder”), or Political Asylee or Refuge.
Education and Experience
- M.S. or Ph.D. in Materials Science, Polymer Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant industrial or laboratory experience, including at least 2 years of hands-on experience with DMA, TMA, and/or rheometry.
- Strong understanding of thermal, mechanical, and/or viscoelastic properties of materials, particularly polymers and polymer-based materials.
- Experience designing experiments, selecting appropriate test conditions, interpreting analytical results, and connecting those results to material properties and performance.
- Experience solving materials-related technical problems and investigating material behavior or performance.
- Experience with instrument operation, method development, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Hands-on experience with DSC and/or TGA is highly desirable.
- Prior experience with GPC, UV-Vis and FTIR also desirable
- Experience with other complementary materials characterization techniques is a plus.
- Ability to clearly communicate technical findings through written reports and discussions with clients.
Physical Requirements:
- The person in this position needs to move about inside the office or laboratory to access file cabinets, machinery, equipment etc.
- Ability to continuously operate a personal computer or lab equipment for extended periods of time (4 or more hours).
- Physical dexterity sufficient to use hands, arms, and shoulders repetitively to operate a keyboard and other lab equipment, use a telephone, access file cabinets and other items stored at various levels, including overhead.
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position 90% of the time.
- Ability to speak and hear well enough to communicate clearly and understandably with sufficient volume to ensure an accurate exchange of information in normal conversational distance, over the telephone online, and in a group setting.
- Learn new tasks, remember processes, maintain focus, complete tasks independently, make timely decisions in the context of a workflow, ability to communicate with visitors, ability to complete tasks in situations that have a speed or productivity quota.
The essential physical and mental requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
