Job Description
Eurofins Built Environment Testing is seeking a Business Unit Manager (BUMa) for our Southern California team and will be located in Tustin, CA!
The Business Unit Manager is responsible for maintaining positive operating margin at the laboratory level and for meeting and exceeding the annual budget. Supervises all laboratory personnel and provides leadership and direction as needed. Responsible for ensuring compliance and integration of facility operation with corporate and regulatory policies and procedures. The Business Unit Manager will serve as a liaison with corporate business partners and will champion Company policies, vision, and mission. The ideal candidate will reside in either Phoenix, AZ or Las Vegas, NV.
Business Unit Manager responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Lead the business unit with an entrepreneurial and growth-oriented mindset, with full accountability for sales, operations, profitability, people, customer satisfaction, and overall business performance.
- Own the full P&L, including revenue, profitability, labor, operating expenses, capital expenditures, budgeting, forecasting, and achievement of annual financial and growth objectives.
- Lead the commercial growth of the business, including sales strategy and execution, new business development, customer retention and expansion, pipeline development, pricing, major proposals, contract negotiations, and identification of new markets and services.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with key customers, strategic accounts, industry partners, and other stakeholders, while ensuring the organization consistently delivers on customer commitments.
- Lead operational excellence and continuous improvement across laboratory operations, quality, logistics, customer service, and other functions, with a focus on quality, turnaround time, productivity, efficiency, capacity utilization, cost control, and profitable growth.
- Build, lead, develop, and retain a high-performing team, establishing clear expectations and accountability while fostering a culture of teamwork, customer focus, employee engagement, continuous improvement, professional development, and profitable growth.
- Ensure appropriate staffing, scheduling, training, resource allocation, and organizational capabilities are in place to support current business requirements and future growth.
- Establish, monitor, and analyze key financial, commercial, and operational performance indicators, including revenue, profitability, sales pipeline, labor costs, productivity, turnaround time, quality, and customer performance, and take appropriate corrective action when performance is below expectations.
- Ensure compliance with applicable quality, safety, company, regulatory, and employment policies and procedures, including appropriate technical conduct, quality control, recordkeeping, methods, SOPs, and Quality System requirements.
- Manage and develop the business unit leadership team, including performance management, coaching, succession planning, annual reviews, and employee relations, in partnership with Human Resources as appropriate.
- Collaborate with other Business Unit Managers and Eurofins leadership to optimize capabilities, capacity, customer service, cross-selling opportunities, investments, and overall company performance, and represent the business unit in customer, commercial, operational, strategic, and technical meetings as appropriate.
- Conduct all activities in a safe and efficient manner, travel overnight up to 25% based on business needs, and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in business, science, engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
- MBA preferred.
- At least 10 years of progressive business leadership experience that includes full P&L management of a business or significant business unit.
- Demonstrated experience successfully leading the commercial growth of a business, including revenue growth, new business development, customer retention and expansion, sales execution, and market development.
- Demonstrated experience successfully leading operational excellence and business growth, including improving productivity, profitability, customer performance, organizational capabilities, and overall operating results.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and execute business strategies that deliver measurable improvements in revenue, profitability, and operational performance.
- Demonstrated ability to lead both commercial and operational teams and create alignment between sales growth, customer expectations, and operational execution.
- Strong financial and business acumen, including experience with budgets, forecasts, financial statements, pricing, investments, cost management, and overall business profitability.
- Experience managing a business or business unit with significant revenue, operating complexity, and multiple functional areas.
- Experience in laboratory testing, environmental services, scientific services, or a related technical services business is preferred.
- Demonstrated success in building, developing, and holding high-performing teams accountable for results.
- Strong commercial orientation with excellent customer relationship, business development, and negotiation skills.
- Ability to identify opportunities, solve complex business problems, make sound decisions, establish priorities, and effectively delegate responsibilities.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities with the ability to translate business data into actionable strategies.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with employees, customers, and senior leadership.
- Professional working proficiency in English is required, including the ability to read, write, and speak in English.
- Ability to travel overnight up to 25% based on business needs.
- Authorization to work in the United States indefinitely without restriction or sponsorship.
Additional Information
The compensation range for this position is $120,000 - $150,000 per year commensurate with level of experience. Position is eligible for an annual bonus and stock options.
