Job Description

Position Overview:

The Group Leader will oversee the operations of the team in a tobacco facility. They will be responsible for the direct management of the non-leadership employees in the deaprtment and assumes accountability for laboratory sample volume, meeting turnaround times, and ensuring quality data.

Position Duties:

  • Lead a team of approximately 10-15 Lab Technicians and Scientists carrying out Solid Phase Extraction (SPE), and Liquid-Liquid extractions by following methods in an ISO17025 accredited analytical production lab. Contribute at the bench and serve as subject matter expert on extractions.
  • Coordinate sample throughput by working closely with the sample receiving, smoke, and aerosol groups upstream, and the analytical groups downstream from the extractions process. Schedule personnel carrying out extractions based on lab capacity.
  • Assist with the transition of a method-based team to a process-based team by assigning duties, conducting/overseeing training, implementing new process flows, and managing change. Engage with personnel and the Eurofins leadership team for a smooth and coordinated effort.
  • Meet all productivity metrics (turnaround times, on-time delivery, capacity utilization, etc.) and quality metrics (right-first-pass, nonconformances, investigations, time-to-close of records, etc.).
  • Perform instrument calibration, troubleshooting, recognize errors, identify root causes, and maintain excellent working knowledge of laboratory processes and instrumentation. Serve as a method and instrumentation SME. Coach/mentor junior analysts.
  • Collaborate with Quality Assurance and Special Projects teams to develop, optimize, validate, and transfer new methods to the lab, and to resolve issues / challenges impacting routine production.  Lead the efforts of implementing continuous improvement projects by documenting ideas, prioritizing projects, documenting projects, maintaining the status, and communicating status to site leadership.
  • Elevate interruptions and issues though an “issues log”, prioritize the projects per client and laboratory needs, ensure each member of the team is clear on assignments and priorities, and allocate resources of the team. Track and report status of projects and updates to stakeholders.
  • Serve as part of the site leadership team to collaborate, optimize processes, and maximize overall site productivity through cross-training and flexing resources.
  • Apply the highest quality standard in all areas of responsibility; maintain ISO 17025 quality standards and accreditation for the laboratory.
  • Demonstrate strong client service skills, teamwork, and collaboration.
  • Proactively plan and maximize productivity.
  • Conduct semiannual performance reviews, interview applicants, keep training records up to date for assigned employees, perform succession planning in preparation for growth.
  • Address personnel problems, concerns, and performance issues with support of leadership.
  • Support and promote company policies and procedures

Qualifications

Basic Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS in chemistry or related scientific discipline required
  • 8+ years of lab/QC experience with an in-depth extractions focus in a production laboratory environment
  • Experience leading a team of junior analytical scientists
  • Authorization to work in the United States indefinitely without restriction or sponsorship

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced Degree
  • Experience in the tobacco industry
  • Experience in GMP/GLP and/or ISO (17025) compliance laboratory environment
  • Strong leadership, initiative, and teambuilding skills
  • Strong computer, client service, scientific, and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently as part of a tteam, self-motivation, adaptability, and a positive attitude
  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simulatneously, keep accurate records, follow instructions, and comply with company policies
  • Strong scheduling and project management skills

Additional Information

Position is full-time Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm with overtime as needed. Candidates currently living within a commutable distance of Richmond, VA are encouraged to apply.
