Job Description
The Quality Assurance (QA) & Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Assistant assists the Quality Assurance Manager during audits and client visits. Helps maintain reference data in LlMS and performs spot audits internally at the request of the QA Manager. Performs customer service requests for Project Management staff, supplies SOP's, certification information and method information. Works with the laboratory to maintain SOP's and other method performance documentation as directed by the QAM. Responsible for administering the EH&S program that provides a safe, healthy working environment for all employees and the environment. Monitors all areas for unsafe conditions, acts, and potential hazards. Enforces environmental, health, and safety policies and procedures. Maintains regulatory compliance with local, state, and federal laws. Makes safety and health recommendations to laboratory management in conjunction with the facility safety committee. Develops the facility Integrated Contingency Plan and coordinates the facility’s Emergency Response Team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform QA data audits to ensure laboratory is in compliance with policies and procedures
- Assist in scheduling of proficiency testing samples and other QC samples. Process and report QC samples as routine samples to appropriate agencies
- Issue controlled and uncontrolled documents to enforce current policies and SOP's
- Assist QA Manager in maintaining the laboratory’s reference data
- Prepare or post certification applications
- Assist in internal and external audits and client visits
- Ensure maintenance of training records for all employees
- Maintain methods capability list on TotalAccess
- Maintain certifications list on TotalAccess
- Assist in identification of systematic problems within laboratories
- Recommend resolutions for ongoing or recurring nonconformance
- Maintain historical indices of all technical records including SOPs, QC records, laboratory data, etc
- Ensure maintenance of records archives
- Monitors laboratory for unsafe conditions or acts to keep lab in compliance with the Chemical Hygiene Plan, EH&S Procedures, and company policies.
- Ensures the proper personal protective equipment is available and personnel are properly trained in its use.
- Investigates accidents, incidents, and near misses and identifies and eliminates root cause.
- Completes and forwards accident report to laboratory management and Director, EH&S.
- Conducts monthly facility inspections for compliance with health, safety and environmental regulations and procedures. Completes and forwards monthly inspection report to safety committee and laboratory management for corrective actions.
- Conducts safety equipment checks to ensure proper working order and sufficient inventory.
- Plans and tracks completion of monthly general awareness training sessions and compliance training, including new employee EH&S orientation.
- Coordinates emergency response team to provide prompt medical attention and stabilize emergency situation. After emergency is over, assists in determining appropriate clean up procedures.
- Conducts the monthly EH&S committee meeting.
- Participates in monthly EH&S conference call.
- Reviews and maintains safety data sheets for laboratory materials.
- Coordinates the management and disposal of laboratory wastes.
- Reviews and approves safety practices in standard operating procedures.
- Prepares and maintains laboratory Integrated Contingency Plan.
- Monitors air quality in facility, including monitoring fumehoods for proper operation and ventilation.
- Monitors and maintains chemical inventory. Approves new chemical purchases.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Associates degree in Industrial hygiene, safety, chemistry, or related field or a minimum of 2 years bench level laboratory experience.
- Requires 1+ years bench chemistry experience. Experience working in a Safety role preferred.

Physical Requirements
Lifting up to 40 pounds, carrying up to 20 pounds; Sitting (55% of time) at computer and in meetings, standing (30% of time) when performing job duties, walking (15% of time) when moving about laboratory: Stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching when archiving files and getting supplies; Computer keyboard, paperwork; Conversational hearing ability; Viewing computer screen, reading documents; Conversational speaking ability
Environmental Conditions
Majority of time spent in a typical office environment with frequent visits to laboratory areas. Potential exposure to caustic, corrosive, or carcinogenic samples exists when in laboratory areas.
Additional Information
Compensation Range: $22- $27 per hour depending on qualification and experience.
Position is full-time, Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm with possible overtime as needed. Training will be the same as your normal shift.
This position is required to be onsite. It is not a remote position.
