                   CHIEF MEDICAL SCIENTIST IN CLINICAL CHEMISTRY/Blood Sciences

Job Description

The Chief Medical Scientist, Clinical Chemistry will have responsibility for the overall operations of the Clinical Chemistry Department. Work closely with and support The Laboratory Services Manager, General Manager, Principal Biochemist and Consultant Chemical Pathologist and Medical Director on issues related to the department. To lead and co-ordinate senior medical scientists, basic grade scientists, Technicians and auxiliary laboratory personnel within the department.

Main Responsibilities:

·         Responsible for the overall operations of the Clinical Chemistry Department.

·         To assist Eurofins in maintaining a high standard in medical testing.

·         Provide support to clients and colleagues to ensure a first-class service.

·         To maintain and enhance their professional knowledge and skills as required.

·         Work with colleagues to contribute towards the continuous improvement of the department.

·         Demonstrate behaviour consistent with the mission and values of Eurofins.

·         Lead and co-ordinate senior medical scientists, basic grade scientists, Technicians and auxiliary laboratory personnel within the department. Ensure that the team is allocated according to their ability, education, training and patient needs and apply maximum delegation compatible with safe work practice.

·         Manage the roster, organisation of workload, prioritising tasks to ensure the effective running of Clinical Chemistry.

·         Manage the training needs within the department to ensure there is adequate staff trained in all areas of delivery of service.

·         Overall responsibility for overdue and urgent work files.

·         Observe the strictest confidence when dealing with all aspects of patient and Company information.

Specific Tasks:

·         Use of Laboratory Information Management Systems in place in the laboratory.

·         Be aware and compliant with all documentation related to your department.

·         Reporting and contributing to monitoring, recording and investigations for non-conformances and incident reports.

·         Responsible for the completion of the department’s daily tasks to a high standard to ensure patient results are delivered in a timely manner.

·         Authorise results, ensuring result accuracy at all times.

·         Assist in result entry and reporting of external referral laboratories results.

·         Evaluate results and communicate with the Consultant Chemical Pathologist and Medical Director, Principal Biochemist, Laboratory Services Manager, Consultants and/or requesting clinician any relevant information regarding patient safety.

·         Routine duties and sample analysis as required to ensure patient results are delivered in a timely manner.

·         Processing of samples in a multi-disciplinary environment incorporating automated and manual methods of analysis to include pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical processes.

·         Rotate through all of the divisions where necessary

·         Responsible for the calibration and quality control on department instrumentation.

·         Participate in the completion, timely reporting and review of EQA.

·         Be responsible for the validations and verifications of new or amended methods/kits/equipment when required.

·         Contribute to monitoring, recording and investigations for audits.

·         Report or contribute to the monitoring and recording of complaints and investigations of clinical complaints, taking corrective action as appropriate.

·         Work closely with and support The Laboratory Services Manager, General Manager, Principal Biochemist and Consultant Chemical Pathologist and Medical Director on issues related to the department.

·         Prepare budget estimates including a planned programme for replacing capital equipment.

·         Ensure, in collaboration with The General Manager, the expenditure is controlled within budget and identify potential for efficiency savings through improved practices and innovation.

·         Maintain an asset register of appropriate equipment, in conjunction with the Quality Department.

·         Provide statistical and management information as required by General Manager in a timely manner.

·         Produce an annual departmental report.

·         Work towards achieving the short and long-term departmental goals & quality objectives.

·         Participate in setting-up and implementing the Department’s Laboratory service that supports the clinical needs of our patients and is consistent with the mission, vision, values and strategic plan of Eurofins Biomnis.

·         Help to identify weaknesses in the Department/Laboratory and promote through consultation, ways of improvement.

·         Assist in the selection of new equipment together with the Principal Biochemist, and Laboratory Services Manager. 

·         As required, collaborate in approved research/development work to the highest professional standards, as determined by the senior management team.

·         Overall responsibility for the management of reagent and consumable stock levels.

·         Overall responsibility for the maintenance of instrumentation including troubleshooting and organizing preventative maintenance of equipment.

·         Ensure there are service contracts in place for all equipment.

·         Advise any equipment failures or problems encountered in the course of carrying out his/her duties and highlighting any potential need for upgrade of aged or worn equipment.

·         Demonstrate Good Laboratory Practice.

Qualifications

Education: 

·         Bachelor Degree & Master Degree in Biomedical Science

Experience: 

At least 2 years’ experience as a Senior Medical Scientist

Any required licences / certifications or membership:

·         Full registration with the relevant professional body in Ireland as a Medical Scientist, CORU.

Knowledge:

·          Have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and management ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.

Skills and Abilities:

·         Ability to identify and implement operational processes to the standard of best practice in order to optimise use of resources.

·         Proven ability to work and deliver services within agreed budgets.

·         Encourages lab personnel towards professional growth and development by sharing information.

Health Requirements:

A candidate must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties and be fit to carry out duties.

Remuneration: €65,000
