Job Description

Please note the working hours are: Monday - Thursday (08:00 - 16:30), Friday (08:00 - 15:30)

Supervise the performance of the analysts working in the Chemistry laboratory.  Conduct testing as needed.  Provide ongoing support within the laboratory and support any laboratory investigations. Deliver competency based training programme. Support in troubleshooting any laboratory issues working with other staff as required.  Responsible jointly with all other members of staff to ensure that laboratory is a safe environment, and that appropriate safety equipment is available and used.

Principal Responsibilities

Perform duties in accordance with the requirements of GMP systems locally. Manage and deliver the competency based training programme. Line management made aware of progress to allow continuous assessment of the team competency. Supervise the day-to-day activities within the laboratory, proactively trouble-shooting where necessary. Keep management informed on a regular basis of progress and any circumstances which alter agreed timescales. Provide technical and personal development support to staff. Any other task as delegated by management.

Laboratory Duties

Ensure all staff perform all calibrations assigned in a timely manner. Ensure that a good standard of housekeeping is maintained in all work areas. Direct staff if housekeeping standards are not being followed. Work with the technical specialists to provide troubleshooting support as required. Train all staff to ensure high and consistent standards are maintained. Ensure the team is fully cross-trained in all techniques and duties. Checking and verifying of laboratory data, ensuring corrections are made as required.

Quality

Be responsible for ensuring that all analysis and associated laboratory tasks are performed in accordance with Eurofins quality policies and procedures and satisfy the requirements of cGMP and are in accordance with the appropriate regulatory guidelines. Ensure all work is written up on controlled worksheets and in accordance with standard operating procedures. Ensure methodologies used in team are current and correct. Ensure that any out of specification result is investigated in conjunction with the analyst and the QA department. Ensure that the SOP is followed for all investigational work. Ensure that all equipment is calibrated before use and report any non-compliant equipment to management and the QA department.

Health & Safety

Ensure that all activities within the laboratory are performed in a safe manner in keeping with the Company’s written procedures. For each new task, ensure analyst is aware of safety measures and ensure they are trained and supervised as required. Report all accidents or unsafe conditions in the workplace to management. Participate in Health and Safety Training. Ensure staff are using PPE at all times. Always know hazards associated with materials being worked on and correct disposal techniques. On a frequent basis read SDS provided with materials to keep knowledge up to date.

Training and Development

Ensure all staff in team are trained in the technique prior to commencing analysis. Supervise and lead competency based training as required. Recognise areas where personal development is required and seek guidance for appropriate training.

Communication

Maintain a client list and liaise with clients as required specifically related to job progress and potential delays. Communicate as required with management with progress updates. Participate fully in meetings when attendance is requested. Participate fully with QA on issues associated with out of specification results. Communicate any other Quality issues found in the lab. Participate in the appraisal system. Participate in both internal and external department audits, as required.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Chemistry or related discipline and relevant experience of quality systems or suitable relevant experience in laboratory role.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Food Microbiology / chemistry laboratories.
  • Have worked in a laboratory for at least 10 years, and hold expereince within a cGMP laboratory
  • The jobholder must have good IT skills, word, excel, LIMS & pivot tables and excellent analytical skills.
  • Good auditing skills e.g. not swayed, or diverted, be inquisitive etc. 
  • Must have a ‘can do’ attitude and be able to deliver change through people management skills.
