Job Description

Please note working hours are 4 nights on, 4 nights off. Nights work will fall between the hours of 10pm-8am.

This post is designed for a HCPC registered biomedical scientist to work as part of a laboratory team within clinical pathology. This role will include utilizing clinical pathology techniques to provide a high level of diagnostic service.

  • To work as part of a laboratory team, providing a high level of diagnostic service using automated and manual analytical methods in order to provide patients with reliable diagnosis and treatment.
  • To perform a range of specialist technical and scientific activities.
  • To supervise the MLA(s) and less experienced BMS staff in the department to provide high quality clinical diagnostic service.
  • To support the training of other members of staff under the supervision of senior BMS and the operational lead.
  • To process the specimens received and to undertake the related tasks in the various sections of the laboratory, leading to the reporting and interpretation of results in accordance with agreed policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • To interpret first line laboratory results and take appropriate actions in line with laboratory policies and procedures. e.g. authorization of results, ordering relevant follow-up laboratory procedures, adding technical and approved pre-defined clinically relevant comments, referring results for clinical interpretation or opinion, informing the requestor of clinically significant result.
  • Provide approved departmental information and advice to other healthcare professionals, and to refer on to appropriate specialists requests for information out with their area of responsibility.
  • To liaise with senior BMS staff, medical and scientific staff in all matters relating to diagnosis.
  • Maintain the quality assurance procedures of the department, ensuring work towards UKAS ISO15189 standards. Measure and monitor the accuracy and imprecision of laboratory investigations using appropriate quality control procedures.

Qualifications

  • Basic biochemistry techniques including Roche Cobas 8000 systems
  • BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or equivalent academic achievement ratified by the IBMS
  • UK State Registration (HCPC)
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Successful completion of Training Log Book and oral assessment of discipline specific competence for HCPC registration
  • Minimum of 2 years post HCPC registration working in Biochemistry
  • Technically adept at most laboratory procedures
  • Well-developed physical skills, especially in the manipulation of pipettes and other laboratory equipment.  Also must be adept and precise when handling samples.
