Job Description

Organize and direct the operational activities of the Environmental Microbiology laboratory and satellite laboratories. In collaboration with the Business Unit Manager, develop, analyze and evaluate operational metrics and overall health of laboratory performance. Provide oversight for method development, accreditation, and other operational laboratory initiatives. Direct leadership of key laboratory personnel, and provide leadership and support to all laboratory personnel.  Identify and deploy operational best practices.  Develop, deploy, and enforce qualify controls and supporting systems to ensure that all laboratory generated results meet or exceed client, local, state, and federal quality standards.  Develop, deploy, and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure the safety and well-being of all laboratory personnel.  Ensure laboratory is operated in accordance with all local, state, and federal regulations governing the safe operation of a commercial laboratory.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Demonstrates and promotes the company vision.
  • Prioritizes daily operational activities.
  • Ensures all quality control systems are operational and in force in all operations within scope.
  • Maintains staffing to achieve workload goals by adjusting personnel to meet peak demands.
  • Provides turn-around-time (TAT) management.
  • Ensures Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) are in place, relevant, and continually evaluated.
  • Monitors Health and Safety program to ensure all company laboratory operations and staff are in full and continuous compliance.
  • Prepares for and facilitates periodic customer or regulatory audits of all laboratories within scope.
  • Maintains current knowledge of industry standards and regulatory environment.
  • Reviews and approves SOPs.
  • Actively participates in strategic planning.
  • Provides method development leadership and oversight.
  • Builds and maintains positive client relationships.
  • Ensures client satisfaction.
  • Represents the laboratory at conferences and makes presentations as required.
  • Provides special project leadership (LIMS improvements, Lean initiatives, Operational Best Practices, other).
  • Provides laboratory operations leadership.
  • Assists in capital budgeting and execution.
  • Assists in operational budgeting.
  • Understands costs of testing and how to calculate them.
  • Initiates advances in methodology and/or technology use.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Interface with and represent laboratory operations to local, state, and federal regulators as required from time to time.
  • Recruits, hires, and manages laboratory staff.
  • Performs annual reviews and creates and maintains job plans.
  • Executes human resources management functions as required for laboratory staff within scope.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements below are representative of the knowledge, skill or ability required. 

·         Expertise in field of study;

·         Excellent communication skills – written and oral;

·         Demonstrated success in improving operational, profit, quality, and safety performance;

Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, or other related science with a minimum of 5 years laboratory operations experience.

·         Experience in analytics;

·         Strong communication skills (written and oral)

·         Strong computer skills (MS Office Suite, Outlook, LIMS, etc)

·         Business acumen;

Strong problem solving skills;
