We're large enough that you'll focus on meaningful, complex challenges, but small enough that you can make a rewarding impact.

Job Description

Do you have a passion for design, product engineering, and accessibility? If so, this might be the role for you!

The Accessibility team empowers product teams to launch features and experiments that are accessible-by-design. We are responsible for providing guidance and solving issues regarding how usable our platform (Native and Web) is for users with disabilities. We ensure our user experiences are accessible for buyers and sellers leveraging assistive technologies. We also work side by side with the Design Systems team to ensure that our reusable components are accessible.

Our team is open to both remote candidates and candidates located in Etsy’s Brooklyn HQ.

About the role

  • You’ll collaborate with other Product Engineering teams on making new user experiences accessible

  • You’ll help triage and fix accessibility bugs

  • You’ll push code in Git and GitHub

  • You will engage with a wide range of teams to guide their accessibility fixes

  • You’ll answer questions in Slack and Email regarding new and existing accessibility challenges

  • You’ll collaborate with our Design Systems teams to implement accessibility as a requirement

  • You’ll write, maintain, and review code primarily in JavaScript, used in applications built in PHP

  • You’ll build new experiences that are perhaps invisible to many users but make the world of difference to users using assistive technologies (eg: alt text)

  • You’ll provide tooling and documentation for Product Engineering teams on how future features may be developed with accessibility in mind from the start

About you

  • You’re passionate about creating and advocating for accessible experiences

  • You’re an engineer with experience writing accessible frontend code with a deep knowledge of JavaScript

  • You have experience using assistive technologies, such as screen readers.

  • You are comfortable working with legacy code while working towards improving it

  • You are comfortable collaborating on product experiences with other product teams across the company

  • You’re interested in observing existing development patterns, identifying their strengths and weaknesses, and crafting flexible and maintainable solutions to augment those patterns

  • You have an appreciation for systems-thinking when it comes to creating reusable code and consistent experiences for our internal teams

  • You believe that building simple, usable tools that work well together can empower engineers and designers to create better products.

  • You are mindful of the future and strive to create reliable, documented code that other people–or you, six months into the future–will find easy to comprehend and modify.

  • You might have experience collaborating with design systems teams
