Epicentre is an organisation created by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in 1986. We conduct field epidemiology, training, and research activities for MSF interventions. Our activities for populations in precarious situations are led from Uganda, Niger, and France, and through the programs of MSF and others. They mainly concern infectious diseases and undernutrition.

The Ugandan Research Center conducts research activities on public health issues relevant to Africa, according to GCPs (Good Clinical Practices) quality standards, in close collaboration with MSF, Mbarara University of Science & Technologies, and other stakeholders in health sector. Current projects, include clinical and vaccinal trials, focus on TB, HIV, central nervous system infections, and yellow fever.

Epicentre is looking for a Laboratory Technologist, responsible for:

  • Train nurses and junior lab technicians on proper collection, handling and transportation of specimens
  • Carry out laboratory analyses following SOPs and study protocol
  • Store specimens according to SOPs and study protocol and participate in sample shipment preparation
  • Interpret lab results, accurately fill in lab results forms and registers according to SOPs and study protocol
  • Store specimens according to SOPs and study protocol and participate in sample shipment preparation
  • Be a focal person for specific study (see specific tasks for study focal person)
  • Follows stablished laboratory policies and procedures & Participate in SOP and quality documents writing
  • Analyze samples/controls/standards for internal quality control
  • Support lower staff position in the laboratory & Offer on bench training of students from the MUST
  • Comply with laboratory Safety Manual and safety procedures
  • Participate in and enforce the maintenance of cleanliness in the lab and its equipment.
  • Together with Lab Manager, prepare laboratory activities monthly report & attend research project trainings and meetings

 

Qualifications

Education and Professional experience :

Education:                 Bachelor of Medical Laboratory sciences (BMLS) from a recognized institution.            

Experience:                Experience in laboratory analysis (haematology, clinical chemistry, microscopy, molecular biology and Culture i.e. bacteriology and/or TB).                                

Languages:                Fluent in English

Competencies:          Be thorough, flexible and adaptable, Experience/knowledge of Good Clinical and Laboratory Practices and lab safety requirement

Position based in Mbarara, with travel to study sites and Kampala if needed.

Remuneration according to experience and Epicentre salary grid.
