HR Generalist
- Full-time
Company Description
Our client is a privately held, founder-led business operating across multiple commercial verticals in Nigeria. The CEO brings decades of operational and strategic experience, and the organisation is built around high standards, clear accountability, and disciplined execution. This is not a large corporate with layers of bureaucracy — it is a lean, serious operation where every role carries weight and every individual is expected to contribute meaningfully from day one.
Job Description
ROLE OVERVIEW
This is a hands-on HR Generalist position embedded directly within the leadership structure. You will be the operational backbone of the people function — responsible for recruitment coordination, employee lifecycle management, documentation, policy implementation, and day-to-day HR operations. You will work closely with the CEO and senior team, which means your communication, judgement, and professionalism will be tested constantly. This is not a role where you process paperwork in the background. You will be visible, accountable.
WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS
The company is at a stage where getting people operations right is critical. Hiring decisions, onboarding quality, documentation rigour, and employee experience all flow through this role. A weak HR function creates noise; a strong one creates structure that lets the business scale. The person in this seat will shape how people are brought in, managed, supported, and retained — and will do so under the direct oversight of a demanding, experienced CEO who values competence over credentials.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Own end-to-end recruitment coordination: role scoping with hiring managers, candidate sourcing, screening, interview scheduling, offer management, and onboarding.
- Maintain accurate, audit-ready employee records, contracts, and HR documentation across the organisation.
- Draft, review, and implement HR policies and procedures, ensuring they are practical, legally sound, and clearly communicated.
- Support performance management cycles: goal-setting frameworks, review scheduling, feedback documentation, and follow-through on outcomes.
- Coordinate staff engagement initiatives that are purposeful — not performative — and aligned with business priorities.
- Handle employee relations matters with discretion, emotional intelligence, and appropriate escalation.
- Prepare HR reports and people data summaries for the CEO and leadership team on a regular cadence.
- Ensure compliance with Nigerian labour law and regulatory requirements affecting employment practices.
- Serve as the first point of contact for all people-related queries, resolving issues promptly and professionally.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We are looking for someone who is sharp, structured, and self-directed. You communicate clearly in writing and in person. You take ownership of tasks without needing constant supervision. You are comfortable being held to a high standard and you do not confuse activity with output. You have genuine emotional intelligence — you read situations well, handle sensitive matters with maturity, and earn trust quickly.
You are not applying because you want any HR job. You are applying because you want to build a real career in people operations, and you recognise that working closely with a serious CEO in a high-accountability environment will accelerate your development faster than any large corporate rotation programme.
Qualifications
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
- 1–3 years of demonstrable HR generalist experience (not limited to internships or NYSC postings alone).
- A degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Psychology, Law, or a related discipline.
- Working knowledge of Nigerian labour law and standard employment practices.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (particularly Word, Excel, and Outlook). Experience with any HRIS is an advantage.
- Professional certification (CIPM, SHRM, CIPD) at associate level is valued but not required.
- Excellent written English — you can draft a policy document, a formal letter, or a clear email without needing someone to rewrite it.
WHAT WILL MAKE YOU STAND OUT
- You have supported a recruitment process from end to end and can describe what you did, what worked, and what you would improve.
- You have drafted or revised an HR policy document that was actually implemented.
- You have worked directly with senior leaders or founders and understand the pace and expectations that come with it.
- You bring structured thinking to your work — you plan, you prioritise, and you follow through.
- You can give a clear, concise verbal answer to a difficult question without rambling.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE IN THE FIRST 6 MONTHS
- By month 2: You have completed a full audit of employee records and documentation, identified gaps, and begun closing them.
- By month 3: You are independently managing recruitment processes for open roles, from briefing to offer.
- By month 4: You have drafted or refreshed at least three HR policy documents that are adopted by the business.
- By month 6: The CEO and leadership team regard you as reliable, competent, and someone who makes the people function visibly stronger.
WHAT YOU WILL GAIN
- Direct mentorship and exposure to a CEO with decades of commercial and operational leadership.
- Accelerated professional growth in an environment that rewards competence, initiative, and follow-through.
- The opportunity to build a people function — not just occupy a seat within one.
- A professional foundation that will distinguish you from peers whose experience is limited to large-corporate process work.
