Job Description

Position Purpose:

The Production Manager’s primary responsibility is to coordinate the shop floor activities to ensure products are produced safely, cost-effectively and on-time while meeting all quality standards.  This position has direct supervision responsibilities of the production supervisors who are responsible for on-time delivery of the finished product.  Responsibilities include coordinating efforts between department supervisors to ensure efficient flow of work, defects are not passed onto the next operation, and consistently maintains a high level of quality with the finished product.  This front-line leader must maintain a safe and positive workplace that fosters positive team member relations that builds strong team cohesion within the group to drive continuous improvements in the areas of safety, quality, delivery, and cost.  Must have a strong understanding of customer's external and internal expectations.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:           

  •  Leads with a safety-first culture and champions all safety and housekeeping improvement activities/ programs while being proactive in eliminating potential safety hazards and unsafe behavior
  • Ensures near miss and incident reports and investigations happen in a timely manner
  • Directly manages the activities of the production supervisors
  • Ensure safety and quality procedures are followed
  • Reviews and approves the production schedule to ensure on-time delivery and efficient use of the shop floor resources
  • Approves scheduled overtime for hourly team members
  • Reviews all new jobs with the project management team and the production supervisors    
  • Manages the required resources for emergency and non-standard jobs as needed
  • Accountable for the accurate recording of direct and indirect time
  • Provides information for critical plant KPI’s
  • Monitors the consumption for the consumable supplies, tooling, and welding supply to ensure the operation is meeting the forecasted budget
  • Monitors the proper care and condition for all tools, equipment, facilities, and other physical assets and works with the Operation Manager to determine the need for replacement or repair
  • Assesses, trains, and coaches team members as needed to improve the sites’ overall performance and contribution to the company’s success. 
  • Consistently enforces team member compliance with safety and work rules, company policies procedures, and standards via our corrective action disciplinary procedure
  • Have a working knowledge of Union Contract and be capable of responding to a first step grievance after consultation with Supervisor and or Human Resources
  • Communicate all discrepancies to the proper management personnel.
  • Review and approve all hourly team member evaluations
  • Complete production supervisor evaluations

Qualifications

Education and Training, or Experience equivalent:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree or related work experience
  • Minimum of 5 years supervisory experience and 7-10 years of manufacturing background with direct union interactions

Skill and Abilities:

  • Proven leadership and supervisory skills in a heavy manufacturing environment
  • Knowledgeable in industrial safety standards and OSHA safety regulations    
  • Must have the ability to manage multiple projects of varying degrees of difficulty at one time.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings
  • Experience with machining, welding, general disassembly, and assembly of industrial equipment and components
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office products
  • Experience applying lean manufacturing principles
  • Strong oral / written communication skills for instructions, memos, etc.
  • Must have strong listening skills and be able to make precise decisions quickly
  • Will use handheld measuring tools and instruct staff on using math and measuring tools
  • Must also be a good communicator with effective team member relations skills
