Tooling - Setup Supervisor (OTW)

Job Description

Position Purpose:

Supervises and coordinates activities of the setup department responsible for the machining and weld repair of workpieces, applying knowledge of machine shop procedures, machine tool setup and operating techniques, production machining methods, and weld repair process.  Responsibilities include monitoring in-process quality to assure defects are not passed onto the next operation and consistently maintains a high level of quality in the finished product.  As a front-line leader, they must maintain a safe and positive workplace that fosters positive employee relations that builds strong team cohesion within the group to drive continuous improvements in the areas of safety, quality, delivery, and cost.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:            

  • Manage the daily activities of the senior CNC Machinist and Setup Technicians
  • Review all new jobs
    • Defining in-process steps and tolerances
    • Create / review, manage, and implement CNC programs
    • Responsible for fixture design / selection
    • Work with the weld engineer to validate new weld procedure with the focus being on dimensional features
  • Provide required information to the Project Managers for the quoting process
    • Recommended Process Flow
    • Machining Time
    • Cost for tooling and fixturing required (If we do not have any existing)
    • Cost of consumable tooling
    • Weld Time (include pre-heat)
    • Welding materials consumed
    • TF – stress relief/temper downtime
  • Provide general support to the production supervisor and production machinist as needed for emergency and non-standard jobs
  • Manage the consumable tooling and weld supplies inventory and budget
  • Manage the durable tooling inventory and budget
  • Ensure production, safety, and quality procedures are being followed.
  • Monitor the proper care and condition for all tools, equipment, facilities, and other physical assets in the department and determine the need for replacement or repair
  • Assess, train, and coach each subordinate on a continual basis as needed to improve department’s overall performance and contribution to the company’s success.  Performed evaluations on a timely manner.
  • Promote safety and good housekeeping while being proactive in elimination of potential safety hazards and risky behavior.
  • Consistently enforce employee compliance with safety and work rules, company policies, procedures, and standards via our corrective action disciplinary procedure.
  • Have working knowledge of Union Contract and be capable of responding to a first step grievance after consultation with Supervisor and or Human Resources.
  • Communicate all discrepancies to the proper management personnel.
  • Coordinate process flow with other departments.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Education and Training, or Experience equivalent:

  • Minimum associate degree, or equivalent trade school, or work experience
  • Minimum of 5 years supervisory experience and 5-7 years of machining background

Skill and Abilities:

  • Strong CNC Programing Skills on mills and lathes
  • Experience with CAD-CAM software
  • Must pay strong attention to detail. Will use both simple and complex math calculations, read mechanical and project blueprints, and working knowledge of GD&T.
  • Candidate must have ability to run multiple projects of varying degrees of difficulty at one time.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Demonstrated proficiency in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and MS Office products.
  • Experience in continuous improvement through the design and modification of existing equipment.
  • Strong oral / written communication skills for instructions, memos, etc.
  • Must have strong listening skills and be able to make precise decisions quickly.
  •  Will use handheld measuring tools and instruct staff on using math and measuring tools.
  • Must have good knowledge of OSHA safety regulations.  
  • Must also be a good communicator with effective employee relations skills. 
  • Must be computer literate.
