Job Description

Shift: 1st shift (6:30am-2:30pm)

Pay: Mid to upper $20'sr based on experience.

About the role:

This position will oversee the day to day operations of a two shift weld shop. The ideal candidate will possess better than average skills in TIG and MIG welding aluminum and steel. This person will be a self-starter, be receptive to continuous improvement, be highly organized, self-motivated leader with extensive knowledge and emphasis in fabrication and production management. This position also requires the ability to read fabrication drawings, lay out parts, weld, cut, and grind in order to fabricate structural steel in a job shop environment. This position will working closely with the welding team and other department leads, therefore the ability to communicate and direct them as required is critical.

1.    Maintain accurate daily labor records

2.    Train & evaluate team members

  • Set and monitor daily employee progress goals
  • Shift line up
  • Address each day shift employee and set daily progress goals
  • Shift Completion
  • Review achievement of the day’s goals with each day shift employee
  • Provide yearly honest Evaluations
  • Schedule skilled personal to work with the younger unskilled workers to get them trained
  • Train employees in proper procedures

3.    Coordinate & Schedule team member daily work assignments

  • With Production Manager on daily and weekly scheduling of the Weld shop
  • With other supervisors to make sure work flows in the most efficient manner
  • Approve or disapprove time off as needed to maintain scheduled production
  • Be able to cover other departments when needed (Have an overview of what is going on in your surrounding departments.)

4.    Productivity & Efficiency

  • Maintain 95% productivity of your personnel
  • Check prints for accuracy and accurate machining hours.
  • Make sure that your personnel are using the most efficient tooling and work practices
  • Make sure that correct tooling and job materials are available
  • Make tooling improvement recommendations to Manager
  • Maintain adequate shop supplies
  • Schedule Welders to cover production and vacations 

5.    Personnel

  • Interview potential candidates for Weld shop
  • Set daily goals (detailed above) and provide regular feedback of both the good and bad to employees
  • Address employee concerns as needed
  • Work with Production Manager on manpower needs

6.    Maintenance & Shop/Machine Cleanliness

  • Maintain work tools
  • Address maintenance with Production Manager
  • Make sure work areas are clean and unobstructed
  • Make sure that employees are doing their daily maintenance on their machines
  • Build and maintain a complete and comprehensive list of all welding equipment at both Lansing facilities (To include: machine numbers, nomenclature, location, age and health status)
  • Coordinate with Production Manager about repair/replacement of machinery
  • Maintain proper inventory of materials

7.    Quality

  • Random check and qualify jobs
  • Coach employees to willingly bring up quality issues/concerns
  • Insure and approve the quality coming out of your department. It is a direct reflection of you.

8.    Safety

  • Instill safe practices in employees
  • Provide a safe work environment
  • Correct unsafe conditions or workers working in an unsafe manner
  • Demand that personal protective equipment be worn at all times as appropriate
  • Administer monthly tool box chats with sign in sheet. 100% compliance and catch up absent employees

Qualifications

About you

Knowledge and abilities

Ability to:

Minimum of 5 years of welding experience; supervising experience in welding operations preferred

Required working knowledge of:

  • Blueprint Reading with welding symbols
  • Material forming principles
  • Welding safety systems
  • Welding controls
