Job Description

  • Be uniquely you, come as you are
  • Hybrid working - we value our people

As the Senior Lawyer - Regulatory, you will support our broader Regulatory Legal team in providing expert advice, managing contentious matters, and mitigating legal risk across Endeavour Group’s operations, with a particular focus on alcohol, gaming, food, tobacco, and AML/CTF.

By collaborating with cross-functional teams, this position will actively manage regulatory disputes, protect the organisation’s legal interests, and defend its commercial position. The role represents a great opportunity to leverage your specialist advocacy, dispute resolution, and commercial acumen to navigate complex regulatory frameworks in a diverse business. There is a real opportunity to drive continuous improvement in risk management and compliance, backed by the full support of the leadership team.

Whilst the primary focus is handling regulatory disputes and compliance, the position sits within the broader Legal, Risk and Safety Team. This role supports our businesses Group-wide including Dan Murphy’s, BWS, ALH Hotels, Pinnacle Drinks, Langton’s and various other corporate functions.

Sound good? Read on.

Here is a taster of what you can expect in this role:

  • Dispute Resolution & Enforcement: Provide strategic legal advice on regulatory enforcement matters, investigations, and notices. Develop robust resolution strategies and directly represent or defend the organisation in regulatory actions and tribunal proceedings where necessary.
  • Regulatory Advisory & Risk Mitigation: Conduct rigorous legal research and analysis to provide actionable advice on high-risk regulatory issues (liquor, gaming, tobacco, food, and AML/CTF). Proactively identify litigation risks within retail, hospitality, and gaming environments.
  • Contested Regulated Products & Marketing: Offer legal guidance on the development, marketing, and control of regulated products. Work closely with commercial teams to address regulatory challenges, defend marketing campaigns against complaints, and manage the legal risks associated with these offerings.
  • Active Case Management: Independently manage legal cases, customer disputes, and high-risk regulatory escalations. Ensure timely, cost-effective, and efficient resolution of contentious matters, with particular attention to issues arising from regulated services or products.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration & Strategy: Partner closely with the financial crime, gaming compliance, responsible service of gambling, operations, and broader legal teams. Synchronise legal defense and compliance strategies to ensure a unified approach to regulatory scrutiny and enforcement.

Qualifications

Now let’s talk about you:

  • Law degree and admission to practice as a solicitor in an Australian jurisdiction (holding or eligible for a current unrestricted practicing certificate).
  • 6+ years of post-admission experience (PQE) specialising in regulatory enforcement, commercial litigation or disputes. Experience gained within a top-tier/reputable national mid-tier law firm, or a sophisticated in-house legal team facing heavy regulation, is required.
  • Proven track record of independently managing and running complex contentious matters, regulatory investigations, and enforcement actions. Deep familiarity with litigation, evidence gathering, court/tribunal processes, and strategic dispute resolution mechanisms is highly regarded.
  • Strong expertise in providing risk-based regulatory advice, ideally with direct exposure to highly regulated consumer sectors such as liquor, gaming, hospitality, FMCG, or entertainment. Direct experience managing interactions, notices, and investigations with regulators (e.g., state liquor/gaming authorities, AUSTRAC, or the ACCC) is essential.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide clear, practical, and highly strategic legal advice that balances robust commercial defense and litigation risk with the organization’s compliance obligations.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. This includes a proven ability to draft high-stakes legal submissions, witness statements, and formal dispute responses, as well as the ability to clearly articulate litigious exposure and strategy to executive-level stakeholders.
  • Strong file management and organizational skills, with a demonstrated ability to independently manage a large portfolio of active disputes, high-risk escalations, and external legal counsel spend/briefs.
  • Experience leading, mentoring, or supervising junior lawyers and compliance specialists within a team environment to ensure consistent, high-quality legal output.
  • Proactive and resilient under pressure, with the ability to swiftly analyze complex legal issues, triage acute regulatory threats, and deliver concise, authoritative advice to operational leaders in short timeframes.
