Cell Engineer - Stack Level

  • Full-time

Company Description

EnPower, Inc. is a privately-held company commercializing next-generation Li-ion batteries that have fast-charging and long cycle-life abilities—critical enablers to the mass electrification of vehicles. Headquartered in Indianapolis, IN, we have capacity to produce hundreds of megawatt hours annually. We are passionate about what we do, and are looking for high-voltage, high-ampere individuals to join our team!

Job Description

The Cell Engineer (Stack-level) will be a critical part of the Stack-level Team–one of two teams in the Product Group. This role is responsible for leading the design and execution of experiments in developing stack-level (unit cell) designs. The Stack-level Team will have ownership over the final anode, cathode, separator, and electrolyte designs (mass-loadings, densities, N/P ratio, etc.) that will be integrated into a final packaged cell product. Therefore, the Cell Engineer (Stack-level) will need to collaborate closely with the R&D team to integrate EnPower’s multilayer electrode technology and the downstream Cell Design team to ensure product success. The Cell Engineer will collaborate with Integration team engineers and lab technicians to make double-layer pouch cells (DLPs), 4-7Ah pouch cells, and large-format product prototypes. This role requires a deep understanding of electrode formulations and cell design, prototyping/manufacturing processes, active material chemistries, and electrolytes in order to develop optimized cell designs. This role entails working with team members in accomplishing cell builds and managing experiment/project timelines. Furthermore, the Cell Engineer will design test protocols to assess appropriate cell performance metrics. All members of the team are expected to communicate frequently and directly with technical management to review results from experiments, and continually advance the mission of building better batteries.

RESPONSIBILITIES

●       Designing and optimizing advanced electrode architectures and cell designs for internal cell development or customer-driven joint development work

●       Designing experiments (DoEs), managing execution, and presenting experimental results to technical team

●       Sourcing, characterizing, and evaluating electrolytes and other cell components from various suppliers

●       Supervising/coaching junior engineers and lab technicians working on project cells

●       Provide feedback to Electrode Processing Team on issues with electrodes, and provide recommendations when necessary

●       Manage development project schedules to targets

●       Working with third-party organizations (including contractors, test labs, and universities) when necessary

●       Ability to analyze data quickly and efficiently. Knowledge of Python programming a plus

●       Previous experience with the following is highly preferred:

o   Formulations design for Li-ion battery electrodes and/or electrolytes

o   Hands-on pouch cell (primarily), 18650/26650/2170, prismatic cell assembly experience

o   Production-scale manufacturing of Li-ion cells and familiarity with production equipment

o   Physics-based electrochemical modeling

o   High-throughput Design of Experiments
