Job Description

Under general direction by an engineer, the Process Technician will work intimately with critical manufacturing processes and equipment to produce Li-ion battery prototypes and sub-component products and will hold a crucial role in inspecting defects and other byproducts of production. This position demands 100% hands-on execution in a pilot-scale setting.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Serve as an experienced operator on a given electrode or cell build process; through cross-training, serve as a backup operator on at least one other process

Example tasks and duties include:

• Set-up, disassemble, and clean slurry Delivery System Equipment (DSE) for electrode coating

• Perform multiple slurry mixes and clean-up the mixers

• Run R&D coaters to make electrodes

• Operate calendering and punching equipment during R&D project production runs

• Run electrode stacking equipment and perform terminal tab welding and bagging processes

• Perform cell filling and forming operations

• Conduct cell degassing/resealing and conditioning procedures

• Work with the Electrode Process and/or Cell Engineers in the scheduling of production tasks to meet daily and weekly production goals, while maintaining high quality, for making cells for various projects and experiments

• Track and update materials, electrode, and cell components inventories and/or electrode process completions and cell build metrics

• Provide observations and feedback to Electrode Process Engineer and/or Cell Engineering Teams on processing challenges

• Contribute hands-on work with cell engineers and other technicians on development efforts related to pilot line process development, troubleshooting, maintenance, and corrective action implementation

 

Qualifications

• Associate's Degree - A non-engineering Bachelor’s Degree preferred

• 3+ years of experience working with lab-scale and manufacturing equipment

• Detailed work ethic, close attention to detail, and precise communication

• The ideal candidate will have prior experience in making and processing electrodes (operating mixers, roll-to-roll processes using a slot-die, and calendering and punching machines) or building cells (operating lithium-ion cell equipment from electrode stacking and bagging through cell filling, forming, degassing/resealing, and conditioning)

• Capable of working with powders and slurries with engineering controls and good chemical hygiene and/or working in low humidity environment of dry room

• Willing and able to work overtime if needed

 

Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. and perform the following for extended periods of time:

• Standing or sitting

• Climbing/squatting/walking

• Repetitive motions and lifting
