Job Description

The Director, Cell Engineering will be responsible for the design of Li-ion battery test and production cells based on experimental results. You will be the protagonist(s) in the Cell Engineering Team, and are expected to coordinate with the Electrode Processing Technicians on anode and cathode formulations, mixing, coating, and calendering requirements, Cell Assembly Technicians on cell design and processing conditions, and Cell Testing Engineer to ensure cells are tested to protocols as experimentally designed. You are are expected to communicate frequently and directly with the CTO to review results from experiments, and continually advance the mission of building better batteries. Your jurisdiction includes, but is not limited to, active materials selection, slurry and electrode formulation design,electrode design, electrolyte selection and interfacing, cell construction optimization, inactive material selection, testing protocol design, post-mortem cell dissections, and data analysis.

  • Sourcing, characterizing, and selecting proper active materials from various suppliers
  • Designing Cathode/Anode formulations, including slurry mix protocols and solids content
  • Designing electrode parameters, including mass loadings, capacity loadings, porosities/densities, and thicknesses. Coordinating with Electrode Processing Technicians to produce desired specs
  • Designing cell construction parameters, including N/P ratio, stack count, separator and current collector selection and optimization, and working closely with the Electrolyte Team to integrate advanced electrolytes
  • Designing experiments (DoE) and working closely with Cell Testing Engineers for proper execution
  • Characterizing and disassembling of tested cells (commercial or in-house built)
  • Presenting experimental results to CTO and providing recommendations on development path


  • M.S. or PhD. in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline with focus on energy storage
  • 8-10+ years’ industry experience in Li-ion battery cell engineering and testing in a pilot-scale or greater commercial manufacturing environment
  • Previous experience with the following will be required:
    • Production-scale manufacturing of Li-ion cells and familiarity with production equipment
    • Formulations design for Li-ion battery electrodes
    • Formulations design for electrolytes and additives
    • Hands-on pouch cell, 18650/26650/2170, or canned prismatic cell assembly experience
    • Large format cell design toward specific application requirements (electric mobility preferred), including understanding integration with overall pack design
