Job Description

Electrical Engineering Intern

Under the direct supervision and mentorship of members of the Engineering Staff, the Engineering Intern undertakes a variety of on-going activities and assigned projects at varying levels of professional complexity requiring knowledge within an area of specialty and/or engineering college major.  The Engineering Intern works as a member of the Engineering team in support of contracted tasks including design, modeling, analysis, fabrication, and test activities.  The Engineering Intern will interact directly with multidiscipline professionals in the planning and implementation of assigned projects.  The Engineering Internship is a developmental position and is restricted to college students whose major and personal interests are aligned with the role of the engineering organization and hiring department.  It is a goal of the internship program to expose the student to the technical business environment to better prepare the student to make informed continued education and career decisions.

 

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

1.Participate in technical projects and programs designed to develop personal and professional skills and expertise appropriate to the needs of the Engineering Department.

2.Learn ESA engineering processes and gain basic design experience.

3.Work a basic PCB design/starter project while updating the Electrical Engineering Guide simultaneously correcting issues and discrepancies as they go along.

4.Develop/import a trial batch of IBIS models into our new EDM parts library.

5.Use these models to setup an SI simulation in Hyperlynx SI/PI on the project created in the first month of the internship.

6.Generate procedure for the setup which will be used as a starting point for SI analysis applications within the EE discipline.

7.Learn EDM software and put together training material for the Electrical Engineering discipline to follow.

8.Assist with rolling out the EDM software by putting together training material, help conduct the training, work with the electrical engineers in adopting the new tool by troubleshooting and resolving issues with the software.

9. Perform various duties related to the day-to-day operations of the Engineering Department based on area of specialty.  Examples of typical assignments include:

  • System and subsystem analysis and requirements specification.
  • System and subsystem modeling and performance analysis.                
  • Design of electrical, mechanical, and/or optical components to engineering specifications
  • Fabrication and debug of prototype electrical, mechanical, and/or optical hardware.
  • Test and measurement using standard test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, temperature probes, etc. ...
  • Component investigations with suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Organization and correlation of test data in electronic format utilizing spreadsheets, word processing and database software.
  • Creation of technical documentation.
  • Software programming.

10. Interact directly with colleagues and other internal or external resources in the planning of assignments and completion of projects.

11. Conduct research and prepare reports based on findings, to include recommendations or alternative proposals for action.

12.Along with other interns in the Company, participate in a presentation for the Executive Staff designed to summarize the internship experience and describe at least one completed project.

13.Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Electrical Engineering Bachelor’s degree program. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to understand and follow complex, detailed instructions.
  • Excellent technical writing and documentation skills.
  • Able to work both independently and in a team environment.  
  • Perform tasks as defined by the Engineering department that require understanding of standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Must be able to approach technical problems in a logical and scientific manner. 
  • Must be flexible and able to handle multiple priorities, and be able to work for short to moderate periods of time without direct supervision. 
  • Familiarity with basic Engineering tools and/or machine equipment.
  • Computer literacy and the ability to learn new computer software efficiently.
  • Some class room / project experience with scripting language such as Python and/or VBS.
  • Attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Successful completion of Radio waves, Microwave or RF courses or interest in RF design and focus (Preferred).
  • Successful completion of Power system courses or interest in power electronics (Preferred)
