Job Description

Under close supervision, assists engineers or technicians in applying mechanical engineering technology to develop and test mechanical / Electro-mechanical product assemblies or components.  Assembles new or modified mechanical components or assemblies.  Sets and tests complete prototype units and subassemblies under operational conditions. Analyses data and recommends modifications to components or test procedure to meet desired specifications.

Utilizing a broad knowledge of machining principles and manufacturing techniques, layout, set‑up, and run highly diversified machining operations required to fabricate intricate tooling details, assemblies, and prototype piece parts.  Work with engineering and production personnel to conceptualize, trouble‑shoot, and repair various tools, jigs, and manufacturing aids.  Work from blueprints, sketches, advanced manufacturing methods, and/or verbal instructions. Assists engineers or technicians in applying mechanical engineering technology to develop and test mechanical / Electro-mechanical product assemblies or components.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Efficient and familiar with mechanical tools, processes, and procedures.
  • Must have the ability to conduct quality inspection of own work and follow quality standards.
  • Select material and lay‑out fabrication methods.  Select machines, tools, speeds, feeds, etc., required to perform all machining operations on a wide variety of material types and configurations including forgings, castings, raw stock, and/or partial assemblies which may be complex in nature and critically dimensioned.
  • Machine to completion any or all details required to fabricate complex tooling assemblies, utilizing all standard Machine Shop tools and equipment, i.e., millers, lathes, grinders, jig borers, drill presses, etc., which may require complicated set‑ups.  Fabricate specialized cutters or temporary holding devices as required.
  • Perform all secondary bench and assembly operations such as filing, fitting, soldering, lapping, honing, and bushing needed to complete complex tooling assemblies.
  • Check own work, as required, to assure dimensional accuracy utilizing all standard inspection equipment.  Interpret readings on indicators, micrometers, calipers, sine bars, size blocks and electronic gauges to hold tolerance to .0002".
  • Perform any necessary repairs and adjustments on fixturing, including pneumatic and hydraulic varieties.
  • Instruct and assist other employees as required.
  • Maintain neat and orderly work area.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
  • Assembles new or modified mechanical components or assemblies.

  • Analyses data and recommends modifications to components or test procedure to meet desired specifications.

Qualifications

  • Requires vocational high school education, or equivalent. 
  • Must be proficient in shop math skills (trigonometry, geometry, etc.) and have four years’ experience in interpreting complex blueprints, layouts, sketches, and design drawings. 
  • Must have a working knowledge of all Machine Shop equipment, pneumatic and hydraulic systems, and a sound knowledge of machining.
