Job Description

The Director of Engineering will provide direct leadership to the engineering department and across the company in the development of products and capabilities to meet customer needs and establish / maintain competitive advantage across the product portfolio. The Director will implement and lead the overall leadership structure, ensuring the appropriate engineering competencies, processes, design tools, and culture are in place to carry out the strategic plan per the execution of product and technology roadmaps to meet the goals for the department and company. This effort will be collaborative across ESA and ESL. The Director will guide Engineering Managers and the Engineering department to work collaboratively with the Product Strategy and Business Development teams to understand customer needs and product roadmaps. The Director is also responsible for thought leadership to advance ESA's placement as the industry leader in night vision and soldier system technologies. Strong communications and interpersonal skills coupled with an appreciation and interest in growing the Warfighter Systems market is required. The Director’s responsibility includes cross-functional collaborative work with Quality, Product Transition, Supply Chain, Program Management, and Finance to qualify new products and transition them into production.

Responsibilities & Tasks:

  • Encourage and build mutual trust, respect and collaboration across the Engineering Team as well as the broader product development team (Product Strategy, Engineering, Product Transition, Business Development)
  • Clearly explain job duties, responsibilities and priorities to managers and supervisors of the work for which they will be responsible (through accurate job descriptions) and help them establish priorities that are aligned to the operational and strategic plans
  • Set direction for the department; establish performance goals for the department and Engineering Managers that are clear, specific and attainable (SMART)
  • Explain relationship between individual work tasks and overall organizational strategy and objectives (explain the “why”), proactively adjust and communicates new tasks, roles, and responsibilities to optimize execution
  • Actively solicit feedback from multiple sources before, during, and after task / project completion to ensure employee and team tasks are performed correctly, with high quality, and in a collaborative fashion to maximize team performance and Esprit de Corps
  • Make healthy use of conflict and disagreement to promote learning and expand team perspectives, encouraging the parties to work together towards problem resolution by working with the parties to identify a range of acceptable solutions and when appropriate, proposes effective compromises that satisfy some of each party’s needs; ensures mutual commitment to a solution or decision
  • Ensure departmental staff attend and comply with relevant training and workshops to broaden skills, provide career growth, and improve the performance of the company
  • Consistently seek to perform departmental tasks in a cost-efficient manner; identifying ways to produce the same level and quality of product or service while utilizing fewer resources by creating an organizational climate in which cost effectiveness is valued and rewarded
  • Direct the preparation of highly accurate and precise estimates of costs, obtaining the most recent cost estimates from vendors, catalogs or internal allocations
  • Direct the preparation of budget justifications and proposals that reflect the needs of the department, submitting thorough & accurate proposals
  • Other related duties as assigned by Senior Leadership

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering Field
  • 5+ years of experience leading engineering departments and managers
  • Ability to obtain Secret Security Clearance
  • Ability to lead and inspire department staff to accomplish successful business results by working effectively in teams while solving technical problems
  • Recognized leadership abilities and willingness to take initiative
  • Successful experience in directing a business unit with a for-profit company
  • Ability to implement departmental strategic goals and monitor their progress
  • Provide thorough, accurate information to answer customers’ questions and to meet commitment times or performance guarantees
  • Actively look for ways to help customers (internal and external) by identifying and proposing appropriate solutions and/or services, adjusting services based on customer feedback
  • An understanding of how to direct programs & projects through agile project management, lean manufacturing, and good supply chain management
  • Have an advanced understanding of quality systems that result in quality work
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Advanced computer skills that include using electronic information for timely decisions
  • Maintain confidentiality as appropriate about matters encountered in the workplace
  • Have a desire to learn about all the products or services of the organization
  • Ability to communicate to senior management with suggestions and critical feedback
  • Advanced knowledge of the defense and military industry with specific knowledge about the customer base for the assigned product
  • Ability to determine cost and price of products
  • Fundamentals of Accounting with Profit and loss calculations

  • Effectively change plans, goals, actions or priorities to deal with changing situations, changing gears in response to unpredictable or unexpected events
