Job Description

Structural Team Lead is a senior structural engineering leadership position based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, responsible for managing a team of structural engineers and BIM technologists delivering building and infrastructure projects. The role provides technical leadership, project oversight, and coordination across multidisciplinary design teams while maintaining responsibility for design quality, regulatory compliance, schedule adherence, budget management, and stakeholder engagement.

The position supports projects through proposal development, detailed design, permitting, tendering, construction review, and project closeout. Work involves coordination with clients, contractors, and regulatory authorities to support successful project delivery in accordance with Canadian structural design standards. The ideal candidate brings more than 10 years of structural engineering experience, professional engineering registration in Ontario, exposure to complex building or infrastructure projects, and demonstrated capability in technical leadership, mentoring, client relationship management, and business development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of engineers and technologists delivering structural engineering projects through design, tender, construction, and closeout phases.
  • Lead structural design activities and provide project delivery oversight, including schedule management, resource planning, and budget control.
  • Prepare, review, and seal structural engineering design packages in compliance with applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide technical advisory services and engineering consultation throughout project execution and design development.
  • Identify and pursue business development opportunities to support client growth, project acquisition, and market expansion.
  • Prepare engineering proposals, scopes of work, fee estimates, and technical submissions for project pursuits.
  • Coordinate stakeholder engagement activities with clients, contractors, government agencies, and authorities having jurisdiction.
  • Develop permit submissions, tender documents, engineering specifications, and construction drawings.
  • Oversee construction review services and monitor construction activities for compliance with design intent and project requirements.
  • Prepare technical reports, engineering assessments, and project documentation to support project delivery.
  • Conduct design reviews and provide technical direction for engineering deliverables and quality assurance activities.
  • Mentor junior and intermediate engineers through technical leadership, coaching, and professional development support.
  • Perform peer reviews and support quality management processes to maintain engineering standards and project consistency.

Qualifications

Required

  • University degree in Structural Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Ontario and in good standing.
  • Minimum 10 - 15 years of structural engineering design experience.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering structural engineering solutions for medium to complex building and infrastructure projects.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary project teams and coordinating with construction stakeholders.
  • Strong working knowledge of:
    • Ontario Building Code (OBC)
    • National Building Code of Canada (NBCC)
    • Canadian Standards Association (CSA) standards
    • Applicable structural engineering regulations and design standards
  • Proficiency with: AutoCAD - SAFE - S-FRAME - SAP - WoodWorks - ETABS
  • Strong technical writing, verbal communication, problem-solving, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain client relationships while ensuring project and service quality.
  • Valid driver's license and access to a registered and insured vehicle.
  • Ability to work independently and within collaborative project environments.

Assets

  • Experience supporting projects through the full project lifecycle, including planning, design, permitting, tendering, and construction.
  • Experience mentoring and developing engineering staff.
  • Business development, client pursuit, and proposal preparation experience.
  • Experience working with regulatory agencies and authorities having jurisdiction.
  • Exposure to multidisciplinary building or infrastructure project environments.
  • Experience conducting engineering peer reviews and quality assurance activities.
  • Bilingual in French and English is a strong asset
