Job Description
The Structural Engineer - Building Engineering is a mid-level role based in Kingston, ON, Canada, operating within a hybrid work model requiring a minimum of 60% on-site presence. This position focuses on the structural analysis and design of building systems across commercial, residential, and institutional projects.
The role involves contributing to project delivery from conceptual design through construction, including preparation of drawings and specifications, coordination with architects and multidisciplinary teams, and engagement with regulatory authorities. Responsibilities extend to technical documentation, construction review, and ensuring compliance with applicable Canadian building codes and safety standards.
The ideal candidate brings approximately 5–8 years of structural design experience in building engineering, with demonstrated capability managing project components, reviewing technical outputs, and supporting project delivery across multiple phases.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare engineering service proposals, support project scoping activities, and contribute to cost estimation for project planning.
- Coordinate with clients, contractors, and regulatory authorities to facilitate stakeholder engagement and approval processes.
- Perform structural analysis and prepare design calculations, engineering drawings, and technical deliverables.
- Lead structural design activities and support project scheduling, budgeting, and resource management.
- Conduct technical review and design validation of engineering deliverables prepared by project team members.
- Develop construction drawings, tender documentation, permit applications, and related design documentation.
- Provide technical advisory services and engineering support throughout project execution and closeout.
- Perform site inspections and construction review activities to verify compliance with design intent and project requirements.
- Prepare engineering reports, specifications, technical memoranda, and project documentation.
- Support project delivery activities and engineering coordination requirements as assigned.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Ontario, in good standing.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in structural design for building projects.
- Experience delivering commercial, residential, or institutional building projects.
- Strong knowledge of Canadian building codes and structural design standards.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary project delivery environments.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Working knowledge of structural design software including ETABS, SAFE, SAP, S-Frame, or WoodWorks.
- Basic proficiency with Revit and Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflows.
- Demonstrated experience preparing technical reports, conducting design reviews, and developing construction documentation.
- Valid driver's license with access to a registered and insured vehicle.
Assets
- Experience on institutional or large-scale commercial projects in Canada.
- Exposure to construction administration activities.
- Experience conducting field inspections and construction-phase services.
- Familiarity with Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) methodologies.
- Familiarity with design-build project environments.
- Advanced degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering.
- Experience mentoring junior engineers.
- Experience coordinating small engineering or design teams.
