Job Description

Intermediate Structural Designer is a mid-level drafting and design role supporting structural engineering deliverables for energy-sector projects in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Working within a multidisciplinary drafting team, this position contributes to the development of 3D structural models, design documentation, material take-offs, and coordination activities across project phases.

The role supports industrial facilities and energy infrastructure projects involving structural steel, concrete, piling, and foundation systems. Responsibilities include model development, design review participation, drafting quality control, interdisciplinary coordination, and integration of engineering requirements into project deliverables. Project work is completed within a collaborative environment that includes internal teams, third-party structural engineers, and project stakeholders.

The ideal candidate brings approximately five or more years of experience in structural drafting and design within engineering consulting, oil and gas, or related energy sectors, along with advanced proficiency in industry-standard 3D modeling platforms and successful project delivery experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain 3D structural models using Autodesk Advance Steel and Intergraph CADWorx Structure software.
  • Produce engineering design drawings for structural steel, concrete, piling, and foundation systems.
  • Generate and verify bills of materials (BOMs) to support project execution and procurement activities.
  • Participate in 30/60/90 model reviews and incorporate design review feedback into project deliverables.
  • Perform drafting quality control to ensure compliance with project requirements, standards, and specifications.
  • Coordinate technical interfaces and multidisciplinary design coordination with engineering disciplines.
  • Support proposal development and estimating activities related to structural drafting scope.
  • Maintain awareness of industry standards, drafting technologies, and internal design procedures.
  • Provide technical mentoring and problem-solving support to junior drafting personnel.
  • Contribute to drafting standards development and other continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Coordinate and implement design criteria reviews with third-party structural engineers.
  • Prepare mechanical design documentation, including plot plans, process flow diagrams (PFDs), and P&IDs, when required by project workload.
  • Support field coordination activities and project-related site visits as required.

Qualifications

Required

  • Engineering Design and Drafting Diploma or Civil Engineering Technology Diploma.
  • Minimum 5 years of direct or related structural drafting and design experience.
  • Experience working with an engineering consulting firm in the oil and gas or energy sector.
  • Advanced proficiency with Autodesk Advance Steel and Intergraph CADWorx Structure.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare structural steel, concrete, piling, and foundation design drawings.
  • Strong knowledge of CAD systems, drafting standards, and engineering design documentation practices.
  • Proven experience supporting successful project delivery within multidisciplinary engineering environments.
  • Ability to coordinate with structural engineers and project stakeholders on design criteria implementation.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple project priorities.
  • Dedicated home office workspace with reliable internet connectivity.
  • Ability to travel to project sites and field locations as required.

Assets

  • Experience incorporating 3D point cloud data into project models.
  • Experience with Autodesk Plant 3D.
  • Mechanical drafting experience, including plot plans, PFDs, and P&IDs.
  • Previous mentoring or leadership experience supporting junior drafting staff.
  • Additional exposure to industrial facility, brownfield, or greenfield project environments.
  • Experience supporting proposal preparation and project estimating activities.
