Due to continued growth, we now have an exciting opportunity for a Clerk of Works to join our London team.
Job Description
You will undertake the role of Clerk of Works across a diverse range of construction, refurbishment, façade remediation and building safety projects within the public and private sectors.
The role is suited to an individual with experience in construction inspection, quality monitoring, contract compliance and site-based project delivery. The successful candidate will act as the Client’s representative on site, monitoring workmanship, materials, progress and compliance with contract requirements to ensure projects are delivered to the required quality, safety and performance standards.
Particular experience of façade remediation, external wall systems, cladding replacement, fire safety remediation and building envelope works would be advantageous. The successful candidate will be expected to monitor complex remediation works, ensuring compliance with design intent, statutory requirements, approved remedial strategies and relevant fire safety guidance. The position will be based in our London office and will involve travel.
The Clerk of Works will be responsible for the following:
Project and Site Inspection Duties
- Act as the Client’s representative during construction works, maintaining impartiality and professionalism at all times.
- Undertake regular site inspections to monitor workmanship, materials and compliance with drawings, specifications and contract requirements.
- Inspect works for compliance with statutory requirements, Building Regulations, Health & Safety legislation and quality standards.
- Monitor contractor performance and report on progress, quality issues, defects and non-conformances.
- Support the Contract Administrator, Project Manager or Employer’s Agent in the administration of project delivery.
- Review contractor quality assurance procedures and monitor compliance with approved quality plans.
- Witness testing, commissioning, opening-up works, intrusive investigations and verification activities where required.
- Monitor progress against programme and report delays, risks and concerns to the project team.
- Maintain detailed site records, inspection reports, photographs and progress updates.
- Attend project meetings and provide practical technical advice relating to construction quality and compliance.
- Support the successful completion, handover and defects rectification phases of projects.
Façade Remediation and Building Safety Duties
- Monitor façade remediation, cladding replacement and fire safety improvement works to ensure compliance with design specifications, statutory requirements and approved remedial strategies.
- Inspect external wall system installations, cavity barriers, fire stopping, insulation, fixings, membranes and associated fire safety measures during construction.
- Review workmanship associated with façade remediation projects and identify defective, incomplete or non-compliant installations.
- Provide detailed inspection reports relating to building envelope performance, fire safety compliance and quality assurance.
- Liaise with designers, fire engineers, contractors and clients to support the delivery of safe, robust and verified remediation outcomes.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Identify defective workmanship, materials or construction practices and report findings promptly.
- Verify that corrective actions are implemented and completed satisfactorily.
- Promote best practice in construction quality management and support compliance with CDM Regulations and project Health & Safety requirements.
Reporting and General Duties
- Prepare clear, concise and professional inspection reports, progress updates and defect reports.
- Represent Egis / Thomas & Adamson professionally and ensure the company values are maintained and promoted.
- Participate in internal and external training and assist in mentoring junior staff where appropriate.
Client Experience
The Clerk of Works will build strong, professional relationships with clients, consultants and contractors based on trust, integrity and technical competence.
- Represent Egis / Thomas & Adamson at project and site meetings.
- Provide independent and objective quality assurance advice.
- Communicate clearly with clients and project stakeholders.
- Promote a collaborative approach to project delivery while maintaining appropriate independence in quality inspections.
Qualifications

Essential
- Experience in a Clerk of Works, Site Inspector, Site Manager, Building Surveyor or construction quality assurance role.
- Experience of façade remediation, cladding replacement, roof works, building envelope, fire stopping, compartmentation or fire safety remediation projects.
- Understanding of external wall systems, cavity barrier installations, fire stopping and associated quality assurance requirements.
- Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, façade remediation details and fire safety-related construction information.
- Good understanding of construction technology, building defects and quality assurance processes.
- Knowledge of Building Regulations, current Health & Safety legislation and construction contract procedures, including NEC and JCT forms of contract.
- Ability to identify and report defects, quality concerns and non-compliant works.
- Excellent report writing and communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel.
Desirable
- Membership of the Institute of Clerks of Works and Construction Inspectorate (ICWCI), CIOB, RICS or another relevant professional body.
- Experience on building refurbishment, remediation or public sector projects.
- Knowledge of PAS 9980, EWS1 processes, Building Safety Act requirements and current guidance relating to external wall systems.
- Experience working on occupied residential, healthcare, education or public sector buildings undergoing remediation programmes.
- CSCS card or relevant site safety qualification.
