Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Principal Environmental Consultant to join our growing NSW Environmental team in Sydney. This is a senior position suited to an established environmental professional with extensive experience delivering environmental approvals, planning, environmental management and compliance services across a diverse range of sectors including infrastructure, development, renewable energy, water and government.

The role combines technical excellence with strong client relationship management and business development. Working closely with the NSW Environmental leadership team, you will provide trusted advice to clients, deliver high-quality environmental outcomes, support the growth of the business and mentor developing consultants.

The successful candidate will have a strong consulting background, an established professional network within NSW and demonstrated success in project delivery, client management and business development. Experience winning and delivering large or multidisciplinary projects will be highly regarded.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Consulting

  • Deliver high-quality environmental approvals, planning and environmental management services across a broad range of projects.
  • Provide strategic environmental advice throughout project planning, design, approvals, construction and operational phases.
  • Prepare and review environmental assessments, management plans, due diligence reports, environmental constraints assessments and compliance documentation.
  • Apply a practical, risk-based approach to identifying environmental opportunities and constraints.
  • Provide technical guidance and peer review to support quality project outcomes.
  • Support multidisciplinary project teams by providing specialist environmental advice.

Client Development

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with existing and prospective clients.
  • Identify opportunities for repeat business and support the growth of client accounts.
  • Prepare proposals, fee submissions and tender responses.
  • Represent the business at client meetings, industry events and networking opportunities.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across Australia to identify and pursue new opportunities.

Project Delivery

  • Manage environmental projects from inception through to completion.
  • Deliver projects safely, on programme, within budget and to a high technical standard.
  • Coordinate internal specialists and external subconsultants where required.
  • Monitor project performance and proactively manage project risks.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of project delivery practices.

Team Support

  • Mentor and coach junior and mid-level environmental consultants.
  • Share technical knowledge and practical consulting experience across the team.
  • Support the development of technical capability through review, collaboration and on-the-job learning.
  • Contribute to a positive, collaborative and high-performing team culture.
  • Assist with resource planning and project resourcing as required.

Qualifications

Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science/Engineering, Environmental Management, Planning or a related discipline.
  • 15+ years' experience in environmental consulting.
  • Strong understanding of NSW and Commonwealth environmental legislation and planning frameworks.
  • Proven ability to manage projects, clients and project finances.
  • Demonstrated success in business development and preparing winning proposals.
  • Established professional network across NSW government and/or private industry.
  • Excellent communication, relationship management and problem-solving skills.
