Project Description

USAID YOUTH ADVANCE

USAID Youth Advance is a USAID Liberia funded five-year activity aimed at increasing the economic self-reliance and resilience of 21,000 youths between the ages 15-35 years in Grand Bassa, Lofa, and Montserrado counties. EDC, in collaboration with Plan International and Resonance Global, will partner with Youth Serving Local Organizations (YSLOs) in the three counties of Grand Bassa, Lofa and Montserrado to roll out a set of adapted modular curriculum - EDC Work Ready Now (WRN!), Be Your Own Boss (BYOB) to cohorts of youth categorized under Pathway 1, 2, and 3.

Job Description

The Standby Mechanic Driver will provide transportation and mechanical support to USAID/UYA in accordance with EDC’s Fleet Management Policy guidelines and procedures. This position reports to the Director of Finance and Operations. This is not a full-time position. This position is on an on-call basis with no guaranteed set of working hours. Payment conditions will be based on number of days worked on a daily rate as per the policies and procedures of EDC.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide safe transportation of goods, staff and other authorized passengers using EDC vehicles as needed in accordance with EDC policies and procedures;
  • Maintain accurate and up to date records using vehicle and fuel log sheets provided;
  • Routinely inspect assigned vehicle for any faults and/or damage, whether accidental or otherwise, and submit written reports as soon as possible to the supervisor;
  • Conduct mechanical and engine inspections on project vehicles, identifying issues and recommending maintenance and repair as needed;
  • Prepare weekly control sheet for supervisor to review and schedule vehicle repairs and maintenance as necessary;
  • Ensure the periodic scheduled vehicle maintenance is completed;
  • Comply with EDC policies and procedures for safe vehicle operation and risk mitigation, ensuring proper use of door locks, parking in secure locations and timing of trips, and other policies and procedures are followed;
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications

The candidate for the position of Standby Mechanic Driver shall have at a minimum the following qualifications:

Education:

Minimum of a Secondary School Certificate or its equivalent, proof of training in auto mechanics, defensive driving and basic computer skills.

Skills and Experience 

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience as a professional mechanic driver with a reputable organization; experience working on USAID funded projects a plus;
  • Experience driving four-wheel drive vehicles and driving on unpaved rural roads;
  • Practical experience in maintaining vehicles and conducting minor repairs;
  • Ability to make frequent up-country travels, often long-distance and sometimes overnight;
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with all classes and a safe driving record with no traffic violations;
  • Previous training in safe vehicle operation/defensive driving preferred
  • Good awareness and commitment to follow all local and national driving laws, rules and regulations;
  • High level of integrity and attention to detail;
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to proficiently read, speak and write in English;
  • Ability to remain calm in high-stress situations such as road accidents, bad weather conditions and impatient drivers;
  • Must be reliable, dependable, flexible and willing to work beyond routine hours;

Language:

Fluency in English is required.
