The SABES ESOL Curriculum and Instruction Professional Development (PD) Center within the School Improvement Portfolio has an opening for a part-time (80%) Adult ESOL & Professional Development Specialist (Training & Technical Assistance Associate II), reporting to the Program Director. This position requires some regular travel for day-long site-visits within Massachusetts. The role is based out of the Waltham, MA office; however, Massachusetts-based telecommuters will be considered. 

Job Description

The School Improvement portfolio is one of five portfolios of work in the US division, and is focused on understanding, improving and transforming education systems and educational practice through the use of evidence and continuous learning. We do so by conducting research and evaluation and providing technical assistance in K-12 education, higher education, and adult education in both formal and informal settings in partnership with federal and state agencies, schools and school districts, community-based organizations, foundations and other research and non-profit organizations.

In particular, the Adult ESOL & Professional Development Specialist will join the System for Adult Basic Education Support (SABES) ESOL Curriculum and Instruction PD Center to shape the professional development landscape for educators in the field of Adult ESOL. The Specialist will design and facilitate high-quality professional development (HQPD), provide technical assistance and coaching to build the capacity of ESOL teachers and program directors, contributing to anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion (ADEI) efforts, and support the PD Center in meeting the contract deliverables with funder, the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’ Adult and Community Learning Services (ACLS).

Essential Functions: 

  • Designs and facilitates high-quality professional development in multiple modalities (online, blended, coaching, in-person, and communities of practice) aligned to the MA Professional Standards for Teachers of Adult ESOL
  • Reviews ESOL program curricula and provide feedback and coaching support to programs; contributes to efforts to survey, analyze, and respond to adult ESOL educator PD needs, including participating in program site visits; incorporate feedback into PD planning
  • Conducts site visits to ESOL programs throughout Massachusetts
  • Contributes to website content, calendar posts, newsletters, and social media efforts in collaboration with the SABES Communication Center
  • Collaborates with subject matter experts in the development and delivery of PD initiatives; assists with strategic planning and continuous improvement of the ESOL PD Center
  • Troubleshoots complex problems, proposing solutions and recommending solutions
  • Attends statewide (MA) meetings of SABES PD providers, and attends and presents at relevant AE meetings and conferences such as MCAE, COABE, TESOL, MATSOL, NCTN, and the Annual ACLS Directors’ Meeting
  • Coordinates administrative and logistical tasks in conjunction with PD Center Director 

Qualifications

    Education:  

    • Bachelor’s degree required in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), highly preferred, or degree in related fields, including 7+ years’ experience in teaching adult English learners using evidence-based practices in both in-person and remote instruction classrooms and experience developing, facilitating, and evaluating high-quality professional development using a variety of delivery modalities
    • Master’s degree (preferred) in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), or degree in related fields, with 5+ years related experience (as above)

    Skills/experience: 

    • Experience in standards aligned ESOL curriculum development and instruction
    • Familiarity with the MA English Language Proficiency Standards and the MA Professional Standards for Teachers of Adult ESOL; Familiarity with the functions of Massachusetts adult education programs
    • Experience developing and facilitating professional development support (workshops, communities of practice, technical assistance, coaching)
    • Facility using digital tools and ed tech instructional tools (LMS’s, Google Suite, Zoom, Excel, etc.)
    • Demonstrated commitment to anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion
    • Strong management and organizational skills
    • Strong oral and written communication skills

    Preferred content knowledge/experience: 

    • Addressing the needs of adults ELs with learning disabilities
    • Integration of digital literacy (including AI) into ESOL instruction
    • Proposal development and project implementation

    This position offers an anticipated annual, full-time equivalent salary range of approximately $65,000 - $88,000. Salary offers are made based on market analysis and internal equity.
