Project Description 

The goal of the Teacher Excellence Initiative (TEI) project is to improve the quality and relevance of teacher preparation in Egyptian public universities so that current and future primary school teachers have enhanced skills to increase student learning and advance the Ministry of Education and Technical Education’s (MOETE) reform. The activity will achieve this goal through the following results: 

 

  1. At least 7,500 pre-service teachers in undergraduate programs at Faculties of Education in five Egyptian universities have the skills and knowledge to apply practice-based, experiential teaching methods in the classroom. 

  1. 5,000 in-service teachers in postgraduate programs at Faculties of Education in 15 Egyptian universities apply practice-based, experiential teaching methods in the classroom. 

  1. 50 Government of Egypt personnel from the MOETE, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR), and the Supreme Council of Universities demonstrate improved capacity to jointly plan, manage, and adapt teacher education. 

Job Description

The Driver will provide ground transportation to staff, as required by project activities. The driver will be primarily responsible for the safe transportation and ensuring the maintenance and repair of vehicles. The Driver will report to the HR and Office Manager. This is a full-time position based in Cairo, Egypt (no relocation allowances are provided for this position).

 

Essential functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Transports EDC home and local staff, consultants, and visitors.
  • Conducts errands at the request of project staff, such as delivering mails.
  • Collaborates on the requested logistical activities, including field visits.
  • Ensures essential maintenance and repair tools are always kept in each vehicle (spare tire, tool kit, flashlight, fire extinguisher, etc.).
  • Perform daily inspection of vehicle, alert supervisor to possible tampering of vehicle.
  • Inspect vehicle for defects and makes minor repairs as required.
  • Documents mileage and fuel consumption during regular project use and on trips to the field.
  • Ensures project vehicles are fueled and that the oil has been changed before embarking on any long-distance travel.
  • Ensures project vehicles are parked appropriately at the end of each workday.
  • In the event of a claim or accident, immediately notifies supervisor and completes an incident report, as necessary.


  • Conducts regular maintenance and cleaning of project vehicle/s, including oil changes and checking of lights, brakes, and tires, reporting damages or mechanical failures, as appropriate.
  • Keeps tracks of available and consumed fuel, oil, washer fluid, and spare parts, informing the supervisor about the need to replace any of these items.
  • Accompanies vehicle to the automobile repair shop, should a vehicle require repairs, ensuring that the service provided is satisfactory.
  • Safekeeps the assigned vehicle maintenance toolkit.
  • Keeps a control log of vehicle maintenance.
  • Performs other tasks, as requested by the supervisor.



Qualifications

Education:

  • Some secondary education or vocational training required. 

Skills and Experience:

  • At least 2 years of directly relevant experience is required; however, 4 or more years of driving experience desirable, preferably with a not-for-profit organization. 
  • Excellent driving record.
  • Knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance e.g. (tire changing) required.
  • Knowledge of local traffic laws. 
  • Valid driver’s license for Egypt is required.
  • Ability to work well on a team in a fast-paced environment.

Language:

Fluency in Arabic is required. Basic proficiency in English is highly preferred.
