Job Description

EDC’s Center for Children and Technology (CCT) has an opening for a Casual Data Analyst reporting to the Senior Research Associate for an evaluation of an informal computer science education program in New York City.

The mission of the Center for Children and Technology is to investigate how technology can influence and enhance teaching and learning by conducting basic, applied, formative, and summative research using a mix of qualitative and quantitative methodologies.

The evaluation is of an outside-of-school-time initiative that seeks to develop the next generation of Black and Latinx coders and digital makers by identifying and engaging interested 9th- through 12th-grade students from those communities in becoming coders and digital makers. The program, which is implemented in two large urban sites—New York City and Oakland, California—encourages students along the path to pursuing college and careers in computer science and related fields.

The person in this position is expected to communicate clearly and courteously; to develop and maintain positive relationships with clients, consultants, collaborators, co-workers, field sites, and funders; and to work respectfully with EDC colleagues. The job requires adherence to EDC policies & procedures.

Under management guidance, the Data Analyst provides support to quantitative investigation efforts, including:

  • cleaning data
  • preparing databases for analysis
  • conducting basic statistical analyses
  • drafting and revising summaries of analyses
  • documenting & cataloguing analyses
  • maintaining systematic and detailed records of data, syntax, output and all other associated files
  • working with project team members to perform more advanced statistical tests such as factor analysis and repeated measures ANCOVA
  • writing up results of analyses for audience with limited background in quantitative analysis

Qualifications

This position requires educational achievement; excellent writing skills; demonstrable initiative, creativity, and flexibility; ability to work independently and effectively in groups; and strong interpersonal & organizational skills. Specific requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree and advanced course work in quantitative methods required
  • Masters or PhD in Quantitative methods, Social sciences, Anthropology, Psychology, Education, Urban Studies or other areas that support informal or formal education (preferred)
  • 3-5 years of related experience
  • Experience working in after-school settings with high school students in urban environments preferred
  • Ability to work remotely and communicate with project team regularly via Zoom or access to reliable transportation in and around the New York City area

EDC casual employees generally work as needed.  A casual position receives statutory benefits of Social Security contributions, Medicare contributions, unemployment insurance, worker’s compensation insurance and sick leave.  A casual position ends when work is complete.

This position offers an anticipated hourly rate of approximately $28.00 - $35.00. Salary offers are made based on market analysis and internal equity.
