Job Description

The purpose of the five-year, $36 million, USAID Doniya Taabalo Activity is to improve the reading, writing and math skills of young learners, ages 6-12 (equivalent to grades 1-4), including learners with disabilities, in the regions of Koulikoro, Sikasso, Segou, and Bamako District. The activity will continue efforts of the Selective Integrated Reading Activity (SIRA), but will focus on reading and writing in Bamanankan for primary level 2 (grades 3 and 4) and mathematics for grades 2-4. The approach should consolidate and deepen achievements made under SIRA by improving education quality in one thousand (1,000) U.S. Government (USG) supported Malian schools. The intent is to continue use of Bamanankan as a foundational language so the MNE has a four-year instructional curriculum after the conclusion of the Activity.

Position Description

The Senior Pedagogy Advisor (Language) will assist in the design and use of appropriate, evidence-based curricula and materials for local language literacy instruction in Mali’s primary grades, ensuring that the approach is disability inclusive and responsive to the needs of marginalized learners, including girls. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic individual with demonstrated knowledge of primary education sector work, adaptive pedagogy, and Mali’s early grade Balanced Literacy approach. The candidate will have experience working with Ministries of Education, and will possess the ability to respectfully collaborate with individuals from diverse backgrounds. 

 

The candidate for the position of Senior Pedagogy Advisor (Language) shall have at a minimum the following qualifications:

Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field required. Master’s degree desired.

Skills and Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 to 8 years of similar experience in training of trainers for education;
  • Expert knowledge in the design of effective, inclusive curriculum, materials, and instructional approaches in a bilingual and transitional early grade literacy learning context;
  • Familiarity with Mali’s Balanced Literacy approach for the primary grades is preferred;
  • Experience in disability-inclusive, gender-responsive literacy curriculum and materials design in Mali or similar contexts;
  • Experience in teacher professional development in Mali or similar contexts;
  • Experience using technology to support instruction and learning, and/or instructional leadership development strongly desired;
  • Capacity to work in difficult conditions and function well under pressure and hard deadlines; and
  • Experience in providing capacity building support to government bodies and community partners.

Language:

Fluency in French (ability to communicate in a clear, organized way about complex subjects and develop well-structured reasoning) is required.  Proficiency English and in Bamanankan is desired.
