Project Description
The USAID Let’s Read Zambia project is a 5-year project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by the Education Development Center (EDC). USAID Let’s Read Zambia works to improve reading outcomes for children attending pre-primary (kindergarten) through to Grades 3 and provide professional development for teachers to support reading interventions in Zambian public and community schools.
Job Description
The Positions will be based in the five provinces namely; Southern, Western, Eastern, North Western and Muchinga.
The Reading Coordinators (RC) will provide technical direction and leadership for literacy strategies at the provincial level including working with the Reading Specialist and Senior Reading Director to conduct trainings, oversee and organize the work of the District Reading Coaches, and work with the Community Outreach Specialist and Field Officers to finalize key messages and roll-out training for PTAs/PSCS and Reading Corps volunteers.
Essential functions include, but are not limited to:
· Lead the development of termly plans, as well as support the implementation of virtual and face to face teacher training and coaching
· Collaborate effectively with Provincial, Zonal, and District education officials to ensure that teacher support through coaching and mentoring is aligned to the MoE SPRINT system
· Lead on the use of PTS data to inform identification, selection and support strategy of schools/teachers for coaching and implementation of literacy activities
· Travel to schools as necessary for training, coaching and monitoring of activities
· Support MTs and DRTs to support teachers to develop and use low-cost teaching and learning materials
· Support a diverse group of MoE stakeholders for effective administration of weeks 5, 10 and 13 Standardised literacy Assessments
· Support Provincial SLA development teams for effective and efficient development of weeks 5, 10 and 13 SLAs
· Support the use and implementation of teaching and learning materials, and teaching strategies
· Support the effective utilization of education technology (radio, mobile phone, computer, etc) for in-service teacher professional development as cost-efficient alternatives to face to face approach to CPD
· Ensure linkages and synergy around reading and writing instruction across project activities and MoE objectives
· Contribute to quarterly and annual reports, success stories and other communications
· Other duties, as assigned.
Reporting and Organizational Relationships:
The Reading Coordinators report to the Provincial Office Managers; with a dual line report to the assigned Reading Specialist.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in a field relevant to education.
Skills and Experience:
· A minimum of 5 years of experience working in teacher training or other related education field(s)
· At least 4 years of experience in work specifically to improve education programming at the early primary grades level
· Proven experience developing effective teacher professional development materials for reading and writing instruction in English and in one or more Zambian official languages of instruction (Cinyanja, Chitonga, Silozi, Lunda, Luvale, Kikaonde and/or Icibemba)
· Proven experience implementing teacher professional development activities, including training, coaching and mentoring
· Experience using education technology such as computers, tablets, mobile phones (smart and basic), radios and software or applications such as WhatsApp, Messenger, SMS, Zoom, Google meet, Teams, for remote CPD
Language:
Fluency in English and professional proficiency (written and spoken) in the language(s) of instruction for the selected province are required - North Western (Kikaonde, Lunda & Luvale); Western (Silozi); Southern (Chitonga); Muchinga (Icibemba) and Eastern Province (Cinyanja).
